The British conductor and violinist, Sir Neville Marriner, has died at the age of 92, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields says.

Sir Neville started his musical career with the London Symphony Orchestra.

He later established the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, one of the world's leading chamber orchestras.

Its chairman, Paul Aylieff, said Sir Neville's artistic and recording legacy with orchestras and audiences worldwide was "immense".

"He will be greatly missed by all who knew and worked with him and the academy will ensure it continues to be an excellent and fitting testament to Sir Neville," Mr Aylieff added.
A statement from the academy said its founder had passed away peacefully in the early hours of Sunday.

His recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, which I first heard in the 1970s has always been one of my favorites.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

20 years ago I used to listen to the local classical station when I was working at night. It seemed like half the music on that station was with Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. The DJ was a fan.

RIP
The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

What a great guy. He and my boyfriend were tight friends for years. Dave and I went to England at least twice a year. SNM knew this and told Dave to just "stop by anytime", so one trip, we did just that. No phone call, no nothing. We get to his place, ring the door bell, his wife answers and Dave introduces himself, she says "oh hello love, I was to you might just stop by sometime". Then she says "it'll just be a mo,....he's just in the stinky". I'll tell him you're here.
That was just exactly the last thing I thought I would ever hear. In the stinky --- Oh My Gawd.

Great story - and very British.
What do you mean "we", have you got a mouse in your pocket?

Love the story. And remember his version of the 4 Seasons - which, for a time, was peerless. It was on the Argo label, ZRG 654. I worked at a record cooperative - and that was a big seller. It was a glorious performance with Alan Loveday on violin.

I created a Sir Neville Marriner Station on Pandora. He lives!
