"The Time I Found Donald Trump’s Tax Records in My Mailbox."
By Susanne Craig at the NYT.

I just watched her on George Stephanopoulos's Sunday morning show, and she could barely suppress her glee at her coup getting these documents. My favorite part was when Stephanopoulos asked her if it was acceptable to reveal these leaked documents, and she relied entirely on what the lawyers told her, which is exactly what Trump says about not releasing his tax returns: I'm going by what my lawyers are telling me.

I'd like to see Trump flip the question back to Hillary skillfully. The real issue is the tax code. Does it need to be reformed or not? If Trump took deductions, it was because the tax code provided for them. Once the deductions are there in the tax code, he pretty much has to take them and would be a fool not to take them. If it looks wrong, what's really wrong is the tax code. So, is Hillary proposing to take away this deduction? Is Trump? Presumably, the deduction is there because it's good policy. Will either candidate defend the policy and, if not, promise to change it? I don't see what else matters here. And I suspect the candidates don't even disagree about that.

Along the lines of what Althouse says:

Quote:

If Trump were truly smart — and wanted to lead by example — he would have disclosed his tax returns, showed the loopholes he used, and vowed to close them.

I have plenty of problems with the Clintons’ financial behavior, as I wrote. But at least Hillary Clinton is proposing tax code changes that would cost her and her family money. Trump, by contrast, is proposing tax changes that would greatly benefit the commercial real estate business, which is his primary field, and would greatly benefit his own family. And when I asked his campaign last week whether he was proposing any tax changes that would cost him and/or his family any money, I got no reply.

This whole column and most of the articles I’ve read are based almost entirely on just one page of Trump’s tax filings — the front page of his 1995 New York return. So, you see, we have learned quite a lot from Trump’s tax returns — and we could learn a lot more when and if more of them make their way into the public domain.

So, Donald Trump was nearly a billion $ in the hole in 1995, but managed to turn things around and become extremely profitable?

Isn't that kind of what we are looking to do in the country now??

Do we have enough information to determine that Mr. Trump is (1) actually profitable today and (2) unlikely to repeat his 1995 debacle with America's money?

Christie, Giuliani on tax bombshell: Trump a 'genius'
Either that or he can afford to pay for a decent tax lawyer.

The New York Times led the charge with the leaked 1995 tax report on Trump.

Oh, the moral outrage!

Quote:

For tax year 2014, The New York Times paid no taxes and got an income tax refund of $3.5 million even though they had a pre-tax profit of $29.9 million in 2014, Forbes wrote in January 2016. "In other words, their post-tax profit was higher than their pre-tax profit."

But,but, but the New York Times is not running for President!
They are simply yellow journalists reporting the facts.

I think the point is, not whether his non payment was legal, I'm sure it was. But it just doesn't play well for a candidate. Why else has he himself trying to keep it quiet?
Yes he was a private citizen at the time , not a candidate.
But cmon, it doesn't look right. It doesn't look like the genius he says he is. It looks like a rich guy keeping himself rich while others pay. greedy and gluttony.
If he was smart (sic?) he could have gone public with his records and say, I'm making this public so all will be in the open and then defend against his critics. Instead he chose to evade disclosure ( and today everything gets disclosed eventually) and he comes off looking pretty sneaky and wily.

candidacy for the president is also about how things are perceived by the public, not the nitpick legality.

or imagine if he came out and said, yes i don't owe taxes but since I'm so wealthy, I'm going to donate "x " amount for the common good. instead he just keeps insisting this makes him a smart businessman.

i think the people want a leader, not an oligarch as prez.

Not paying taxes is something we'd all do if we legally could.

It's probably not the act that is going to do him damage, but the perception that he's tried to cover it up. Everybody who wasn't drinking the Trump Koolaid knew there was probably something funny about his tax returns that was stopping him releasing them - now it appears we know what it was.

I didn't hear much complaining from our more conservative friends when that creepy blonde Australian bloke started releasing Hillary's e-mails.

Yeah, yeah, I know, totally different thing, the NYT is a newspaper whereas Julian Assange is an unconvicted rapist, and Hillary is an unconvicted felon whereas Donald J Trump is just an obnoxious douchebag.

Here is an article purporting to explain the whole deal behind the tax thing, complete with charts and graphs. If it is accurate, then Trump is not only a liar, but a liar of awesome flagrancy.

"Trump’s business background is one of the top reasons people cite for supporting him. His claims of corporate success and the creation of 'tens of thousands' of jobs invite scrutiny, however, which I provide in my new working paper, 'Making America Worse: Jobs and Money at Trump Casinos, 1997-2010.' -- Prof. Jonathan Lipson, Temple University

At this stage, I don't think we can trust anything we read about Trump, either positive or negative. I think we can all make an observation regarding what kind of person he is from watching him over the years. Then it's just a choice of whether you want somebody like that to represent you or not.

Personally, I'd rather be represented by Pee Wee f*cking Herman, but that's just me. YMMV.

I love how it's the journalists who made the decision—during an editorial meeting, I'd assume—for the company not to pay taxes, because, you know, that's the job of a journalist. To set financial policy and perform tax management.

But you didn't say it.

You do realize the real estate market tanked that year, right?

You do realize that Trump still owned the real estate, right?

And you do realize that the drop in real estate values were not caused by Trump, right?
