HOLY CARP!!!
There's a curfew in place, which brings a weird feeling (even though it's been ages since I've been out beyond 11pm :lol2: ). Wednesday was a bit unnerving because the location of my office was right in the path of Tuesday night's riot. We closed 3 hours early to leave before protesters started up again, although now it's mainly uptown that is in the path of riots. Things for me have been fine since we've been staying in our safe soccer-mom, suburban surroundings. The weirdest thing was going on a hunt for petrol Wednesday night. Gov. McCrory said NC has about 1/3 of its normal petrol resources, which I discovered is accurate as we only found a station with petrol on our third attempt, and only about a third of their pumps were open. It felt very Mad Max-like, or apocalyptic. I hope it will all be over soon.
And how are you today?

Does it feel like things are winding down, or getting more heated? Good to hear that you don't live near the riot area

I think it's settling down, but mainly because of the curfew. People are agitated, and I hope some good will come from all of this, whatever that may be. 2 of my co-workers are black, and it's upsetting to hear one of them say that she is concerned for her 18 yo son. He's away at college, so he's safe from the mess in Charlotte, but it's still something that she shouldn't have to worry about more than other people, but it is. We've talked about it openly and it's been informative. Regarding her son, she also said if she EVER found out he was part of a riot or anything that isn't peaceful, she'd be ashamed.

So, to make my thoughts more concise and whatnot, I feel that the city as a whole may be calming down, but I believe that things are still heated in primarily black communities.

I felt it was a shame to have to say to customers and co-workers on Wednesday "Be safe" instead of "Have a good day", and to truly mean it and fear that they may not be safe.
And how are you today?

I just read that the mayor of Charlotte asked Clinton and Trump to avoid the area. Good idea.

It's been my experience that that's a lot more capable of happening down there, rather than up here. Say what you want about the South, but I think that's almost universally true. (Where I've been, anyway.)
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Yep, I've found that too. When I gave tours in Charleston, it was the old white yankees who were most uncomfortable than anyone else when I mentioned slavery. It's swept under the rug and just not talked about. Same with race relations. When I moved to Charleston and interacted with many black people on a daily basis I was far more comfortable talking about such things, and have been ever since. Being blind to the differences in our lives and histories helps no one. Choosing to be blind to the differences is much worse.

The lady I replaced is white as well. At one point on Wednesday when we were alone she said something like "I just can't handle the black stuff today. I get tired of hearing about it." I was disappointed in her and sad. So, you don't want to hear about K being worried for her son's safety? You don't want to hear how the other K is afraid when she sees police officers? Too bad. They deserve to speak their minds. She just turned her back pretty much the whole day and was in a bad mood. Tough ****, lady. This stuff needs to be addressed.
