I know he has this vision of a world where everyone lives in peace and we no longer have to spend money on military, etc. I don't believe we are there as a planet yet and won't be for a long time to come, unless it is rammed down people's throats. We have already seen his willingness, and I think Hillary's, to do so 'for our own good'. This sort of paternalistic government is exactly what Orwell and many others warned against.

The flip side of this, as I think about it, is exactly what freedoms do a free people have to surrender to achieve his vision? Only one I can think of. And that ain't happening any time soon.

I just watched the entire speech.

I was waiting to hear what was reported.

It never happened.

IOW, the article's just clickbait, or considering the target audience of redstatewatcher, maybe click-bate.

For the tl;dr or tl;dl crowd:

Quote:

And we can only realize the promise of this institution’s founding — to replace the ravages of war with cooperation — if powerful nations like my own accept constraints. Sometimes I’m criticized in my own country for professing a belief in international norms and multilateral institutions. But I am convinced that in the long run, giving up some freedom of action — not giving up our ability to protect ourselves or pursue our core interests, but binding ourselves to international rules over the long term — enhances our security. And I think that’s not just true for us.

Let us begin anew, remembering on both sides that civility is not a sign of weakness.

More like the feeling you had when Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich Agreement.

Mr. Obama seems to be searching for Hitler so he can surrender.
The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

Two things:

You don't see this sort of thing when Republicans talk up having a huge military? How is that not exactly the same thing?

Also, it was Bush who got modern surveillance—that is, the cataloging of all available human correspondence—off the ground; Obama just doubled down. But to be fair, it was such a low-hanging fruit that I think if Gore had been in office he'd have done exactly the same. The technology was made available and at that point it was impossible to ignore it.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Obviously, the current presidential candidates have absolutely nothing whatsoever in common with the infamous Big Brother. I can't see a single resemblance between either of them and that horrible cult of personality that Orwell wrote about.

I went to see the play of 1984, it's was terrible. I mean it wasn't actually terrible, it was an intelligent retelling of the story that drew attention to the significance of the appendix. But still the story is so brutal, and watching the last act... I can't be dealing with seeing that kind of thing anymore. If it hadn't been a gift I would have left the theatre.

Still it's remarkable how relevant it remains today. Hell we have actual posters in London telling people to report anything suspicious. It's like someone read the book and though 'yeah that's a good idea, let's do that'.

Anyway signing up to more international law isn't Orwellian at all. And trying to move us towards a world where we don't need to spend on the military is about as far away from Big Brother as you can get. (Orwell's authoritarian regime is in a state of perpetual war).

Trying to move us towards a world where we don't need to spend on the military is a pipe dream so fantastically utopian that to even believe it could happen should send that person to hide behind a rock somewhere in shame.

And London is the 2nd most surveilled city on the planet.

Chicago is 3rd - by an order of magnitude.

That world will come about when the people collectively decide that is what they want. If so, it will be a natural process coming from increasing education and communication. The effort today is top down, seeking to impose an elite vision of what the world ought to be from above. In that respect it is quite Orwellian.
