There's a lot about the gut and its microbiota that we don't understand. The vagus innervates the gut all the way to the transverse colon, iirc. However, other than an observational curiosity, I don't see how this study makes the correlation between vagal interruption and Parkinson's.

Also, an isolated vagotomy was a rare procedure in the timeframe mentioned in the article. It was usually part of a "V & P" - vagotomy and pyloroplasty, in which part of the stomach was removed to reduce ulcer disease. I wonder if the "P" part had something to do with nutrient absorption, etc.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

So it is a correlation <> causation situation?

Well, I don't know the animal studies behind the work, so I can't say.

My point is that when you perform a vagotomy, a bunch of other things change beyond the nerve itself. Also, as I said, the vagotomy is almost never done as an isolated procedure (bach can elaborate), but there are anatomical differences in your stomach now - perhaps that changes the gut flora as well. Remember, gut bacteria are much more important than we thought. 30 years ago, if you had said that ulcer disease was caused by bacteria, you would have been laughed out of the room.

The work is promising in uncovering potential causes, but I think it's much more complicated than the article indicates: i.e. - "Vagotomy" = "No Parkinsons".
