How do you train to hike? By hiking. Go do some of the easier stretches, then work your way up.

Eh, you just work up to it. Not only do you get stronger, but you get better about knowing what you need, what you need to carry vs what you don't, and how to carry. So over time, your improvement is better than additive.
Exactly. It only took two backpacking trips to realize that I couldn't take my tent, sleeping bag, and cast iron Dutch Oven. Next trip I'm leaving the bag and tent behind.
