HOLY CARP!!!

Whatever. Do what you want. You are just and Indian who got his "Braves Feathers" from road kill. You know that and I know that. I have no issue with you. But you insult my friends and I will do what I will with your online persona and your wife and you kid and your dog. And you can't do anything about it. Because as I mentioned above--your road kill Brave Feathers. So be good. So let's continue.

Weird. I thought this was an old necromanced thread, and yet it just sprang to 25+ posts in like a moment. Love it. |

What he'll do about it is some words here on a message board. What you'll do about it is the same. It is actual power. Most of us who have actual power know that. It's only your thoughts, not your violence. Even if you do have that violence. |

Larry, this is the internet. We are only online persona. Don't take it so personally! As far as Kathy foes apologize for calling her a "bitch" and I'm all good with you and whomever you purchase. Anyway, you always have the first move. Say what you want about me. I don't care. All I'm asking you to be is a "Southern Gentleman." Not that hard is it? You know the rules. ![]() Love you brother. |

To get things back on topic.................................. Kathy - very cool pictures. Would love to visit there someday. Surprisingly, there was just an article about a guy who did a record run of the Appalachian Trail (46 days or something like that) and finished where you took your picture!! You probably passed him on your way to the top!!

Incredible! I just looked at an article about him. He would have been climbing the day after we finished our trek. I noticed his bottle of champagne. The sign at the bottom of the trail asks people to refrain, so I was wondering if he got away with it. Apparently not My son once ran up and down the mountain, but he sprained his ankle in the process. He has that little bit of crazy that drives him to do things like that and teaching himself cello by biting off a Bach cello suite. |

My old roommate's hiked the AT 1.5 times. His average is 40 per day and that's when he's not pushing it. Thing is, he took a handful of zero days here and there, and also took his time around areas he wanted to get to know better, so his average was probably more like 25-30. There's a huge difference between doing 47 miles in a day, and doing that every day for over a month. |

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
|
Considering the longest I have ever done was maybe 20 on gently rolling trails, 40 on the AT is mighty impressive. |

Eh, you just work up to it. Not only do you get stronger, but you get better about knowing what you need, what you need to carry vs what you don't, and how to carry. So over time, your improvement is better than additive. |

A friend hiked the AT with his son a couple of summers ago. He was in his late 50s early 60s at the time and his son was late 20s. He was in decent shape, but still trained for close to a year. It was really cool to watch his excitement. They didn't do the whole trail, but they did spend a full 3 months hiking it. |

In my spite of my incredibly sore legs, that sounds so appealing to me! I noticed quite a few parent/child teams along the way.

No better way to do that, IMO. Good for both of 'em. Just curious, though; why did he train? I'd consider it one of those things where the training would be the first couple days or weeks. |

In another couple decades you'll understand, AL. The old body just doesn't work the way it used to when you start piling on the years. It's Wednesday today. I did the hike on Saturday. Today is the first day I feel like I can move normally. I could not have even considered an easy hike the first and second day afterwards. |

I dunno. This isn't at all a criticism, but I think maybe it's when you're not used to it? I never ski in the winter anymore. Because I know that in order to get back to where I used to be, I'd need 2 weeks of solid skiing before my body could do what my brain wanted it to. It'd be too frustrating; I'd get out there, not be able to move and just be sore once I got home. If I get into skiing again I'm going to need to live near a mountain. I'm on and off with trail running, but the last time I took it seriously I just started going every day. That first week, it was so hard to even get up from my chair at work. It was a legitimate ordeal and people asked me what the hell I was doing to myself. It's just that I never rested, which, okay, that was stupid, but I think I made faster progress by not easing into it with some plan. People gotta do what they gotta do, and I'm glad people don't consider hiking just a young person's thing—it's definitely not. But I also don't like the idea that you have to work up to something or create a scheme for it. I used to do that, setting up these really elaborate plans and schedules for things, but I found I got a lot further (and had a lot more fun) when I stopped, and just went out and did the thing. |

Isn't it something you're supposed to do? I don't know why they trained. Maybe to prepare mentally? Maybe for more bonding? They were there for 3 months, hiking with all their gear. Maybe training wasn't necessary, but seemed like a good idea at the time. |

I'd strongly advocate against that. One of the biggest problems with the "active lifestyle industry" or whatever people want to call it is this pseudo-authoritative tone that pervades stores, books and magazines. I went into an REI a year or so back looking for some hiking poles. A store guy actually came up to me and said, "do you know how to use them?" The tone of his voice was saying that I clearly didn't and needed to be told. Fuck all of that. I'm not saying people shouldn't ever train. I'm saying that training shouldn't be the expectation. If people want or need to train, by all means. But if you don't, you're not "doin' it wrong." No such thing. |
