ZOOOOOM!
I went out to buy some picks, and came back with something like this:

I figured that it'd be a good way to spice up my picking practice, at which I am currently crap. There was kind of a deal going on at the store, and after double-checking online, I thought okay, why not.

Poor financial decisions FTW!

You guys are bad influences. :P

One thing I like about the mando is that (1) you can use guitar picks, no problem, but (2) you gotta use something. Strings seem just way too high-tension to finger-pick, so it'll force me to learn that and get better at it. Also, much to my surprise, my fingers aren't all that cramped on the neck. Third, bars are not too terrible, and if you miss one string, well, you probably got the other one in at least. Seems a little more forgiving.

There's a ton of sheet music available for mando (because it shares its tuning with violin), but I plan on trying to arrange guitar stuff to help me better understand the fretboards on both instruments.

We're too damn old to be bad influences. But we are wise.

Nice instrument. You are going to have to post something for us to listen to when you master it.

We are all too familiar with poor financial decisions in my house and have not regretted any of them.

Did I mention that my husband has a "dealer"? We have a musician friend. And every time he's over and my husband will talk to him about a guitar or an amp or a speaker, Dave will just happen to have a guitar or amp or speaker in his trunk, and 9 times out of 10, my husband will buy it. <_<

Mandolin's a good choice Aqua.
Do you play one, Renauda? I seem to remember you as a banjo guy.

Neither. I play - or more accurately, clear rooms with - the lap style Dobro.

Also last month, I got a smokin deal on a new style 1 German Silver National Tricone round neck for bottleneck slide. Been having fun with that axe.

Sweet!

Upon looking at it, it appears the mando I picked up is going to need a setup, but heck I might hold off on that a bit just to get used to the shape of the instrument a bit.

I would recommend a proper setup first.
