They'll start spreading it Monday. One field, about 200 acres.

They got the corn crop in, today and tomorrow they'll plow what's left under, then Monday and Tuesday they'll spread the horse sh!t and let it set for a week, then cut it into the dirt.

Hi Cats!
Looks like Larry's wife said, "no."

Interesting, though. I've never heard of using horse fertilizer. Around here, as far as I know, it's typically cow.
And, there is a place where one can get chicken sh!t. Seriously!

So much to learn, so little time.

There's a mushroom farm factory down the road from me. The bring in horse manure and straw out of Kentucky horse country, the stuff they clean out of the stables. It's mixed with various nutrients, chopped up, and spread out to strew the mushroom spawn (or whatever it's called) on, then after they grow a crop of mushrooms in it, they have to haul it out and put in fresh mix. The spent mix I buy to spread on fields sometimes.

It's very "hot", so you can't put it on very thick, then you have to let it air out and calm down for about a week before you plow it in.

Here's a picture of the field as they're cutting down the dried corn for ensilage.

Here's the field as it is right now..

Then, they'll spread the horse sh!t on that with the spreader, and in a week, cut it in with a big plow..

Boy, isn't that the truth.

Just this evening I chased down a word I've seen around but never knew the meaning of: recondite. I found that it means little known or abstruse. That applies to about 98 things I run into every day. It can get you down sometimes. :(

I have cow sh!t for free, because of my cattle. The horse sh!t though is mixed with straw and a lot of extra beneficial nutrients, and then chopped. It has to make mushrooms grow, you see. Here's an article about the very place I get it:

When we had Simon, the barn would have a "come and get some manure for free" day twice a year. Gardeners from around the area would come with buckets and wheelbarrows to collect the manure from the manure pile. It was always fun to watch.

However, the really fun day was the day that they had to haul the manure out. A front-loader would pull up to the manure pile and fill a dump truck with the stuff. Who knows where it was hauled off to, perhaps Larry's?

After the loader took the first (ahem) "bite" into the pile, you could see the steam rising from the freshly uncovered manure - after all, it had been sitting there for months, fermenting away. The aroma was also quite fetching I might add.

It was sort of like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YffwE0vz1YI&ab_channel=cutlerkingman

Our pile was easily 5 times that size and about twice the height.

I remember reading that a horse only absorbs about 50% of what it eats, and the rest passes through pretty much undigested.
