HOLY CARP!!!

Depends on whether your vote is neutralized or "averaged out" by others'. No such neutralizing or "averaging-out" when it comes to driving. |

No, not really. A single individual can cause death and destruction on a vast scale due to bad driving. That same individual doesn't have anything like that much influence at an election. The problem with voting is that it's large numbers of idiots working together. It's more like a load of people peddling an ocean liner. Even if 10% of them are kicked off, it's not going to change direction in a hurry. |

How about requiring a minimum of a high school diploma, or equivalent? It's too bad: There certainly could be some sort of minimum requirement, but the voting process is not to collectively move the country forward, it's for winning. Overall, I don't think we have as much of a voter preparedness problem, as we have a media problem. |

Voter preparedness and literacy will go a long way toward solving the media problem. |

That argument is exactly what I'm talking about. We are clearly failing to provide the poorest citizens with a decent education, so to punish those responsible for this we're going to stop those very people from being allowed to vote. And yes, you can argue that the people have a responsibility to get through high school, however the graduation rate in poor and well-to-do areas is nothing like the same, and this isn't simply because people born into the poorest families are inherently more stupid and lazy than the rest of us. All men are not created with the same opportunities. |

No, John, 'we' are not failing at providing an education. The failure is in perpetuating a culture that not only does not value education but actually eschews it as being inauthentic. |

That's one and the same thing. We all bear some measure of responsibility for the country we live in, however small that responsibility might be on an individual basis. |

Those people needn't be preventing from voting. That would be egregious. No one has the right to do that. How about setting up voter training classes, like driver training classes, for those who fail the test? It's not the fault of the inadequately prepared citizen if he fails the test, and he shouldn't have to be deprived of the opportunity for the rest of his life. Pass the class and you're good. Fail the class, and you can take it over, as often as you need to -- with conditions, like time elapsed before you repeat, or whatever. And free to all. |

OK, let's agree on that for the sake of argument. That said, what do you want to do to change it? The only way I think has any chance of success is for the predominant culture not to accept that and to speak out against it, shrieks of racism be damned. When we give in to that, continuing to focus on the sins of long dead people, we embed victimhood into that culture. |

I agree in part, but find it also true the other way around. Voter preparedness and literacy is not nearly as effective or easy to do in terms of creating an informed electorate. Media is faster, more influential (sound bites). NAEP scores have been flat for 50 years. It's D'Oh's ocean liner metaphor. |

Yes, but focusing on voter literacy will bring the media around to focus on it as well. |

What this argument is missing is that most poor, uneducated people probably don't vote anyway. |

That's right. And, that's why media is more important i.e., powerful and influential. To the "unqualified" voter (as being discussed), the "what's in it for me" is the market. That's why there is such an emphasis on "get out the vote." |

What you chaps really need is decent public broadcasting. I know how you're all big fans of the BBC, so that's it - let's introduce a license fee! (That sound you can hear is heads exploding) |
