Kind of an aside, but something I thought about lately: Dear Southern Bretheren, The likes of Tom and others (hi, Tom) would have you believe that yours is a still-defeated region whose loss during the Civil War keeps you in some sort of everlasting shame in the eyes of the country. Things are bad down there because you lost, I think is how the narrative is supposed to go. Also, people think you're dumb or something, and that you have no prospects. Good! Let them think that! Don't let them in on the secret! Hell, my knowledge of the region only extends to the Appalachian foothills and the Carolina coastal regions, but already it's my goal to move there somewhere. The people are friendly, folks are cool about race and not all weird because they've already been there and done that, ditto that with handguns (even though we're in some disagreement over regulation there, I trust people who have grown up with guns a lot more than those who haven't), and most of all it's small. A great many towns still have great, independent stores who have modernized just enough to stick around, but they haven't turned into some disgusting corporate mess complete with call waiting, esoteric policies and overseas customer service centers. Things are beautiful and affordable, and that which is inconvenient in the eyes of some I find refreshing (and a natural filtering mechanism by which you all keep out the riffraff). So don't get all defensive when people put down the South; just smile, nod and be glad they don't know otherwise. |

Yes, that is a nice area, that is where the retirement home will be. Just a little more global warming and there will be no snow at all. I just have to figure out where the seashore will be in 30 years. There is a lot of swamp in that area that could become open ocean. |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |

Don't go too far South, unless it's on the coast of Florida. Down here, we don't really have four seasons. I miss that, even though I'm a native down here. Tennessee, North Carolina, the Ozarks...all have seasons. |

So it's all an accident, if not positively indicative of the goodness of our national character. I guess we were the last to finally reject this thing that others had always taken for granted. So it taints us forever. Beware of those who want to use it for their own gain. |

I watched a program this morning about the new African American History Museum opening on The Mall. What struck me was how, by building this, we further segregate blacks and tell them they are in fact not equal. You have your own museum, separate but equal. |

Yes, welcome back to the late 1800's Plessy vs. Ferguson. I do wish the term "minority" would become politically incorrect. But, it won't, too much power and money involved. As long as anyone is termed a minority, they are by definition, second. And, usable. |

The story in the Post was about how the King family won't give the museum any artifacts. However, they might sell some artifacts. I didn't realize that the King family had been paid $800,000 for permission to build the King memorial on the Mall. And yes, the great democrat battle cry lives on "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever". |

It is the greatest and most obvious disservice to humanity that we're faced with. If you're black, you have experiences that nobody else, I mean, the people who aren't black, could ever understand. This is the most correct of the politically correct thoughts. It's evil and it destroys. But we love it. I hate it, personally. |

Actually I'm fine with it. I think it's true. But you could say the same about white people, Latinos, people from Burbank, people not from Burbank, people who played Little League, people who were drafted to play Little League but held out for ConAgra, etc., etc. The evil comes from the belief that the experiences, simply by virtue of being black, count for more than one who's white. I'm white, therefore I don't know about discrimination. I don't know about being treated unfairly. I don't know about take your pick of negative experiences. That's the disgusting shit that's ruining so much. I used to think that this sort of stupid crap was just annoying but wasn't really presenting a legitimate problem to anyone. I don't think that anymore. |

I was struck by it, also. Black people are not simply "Americans", but African-Americans, Black Americans, Negro Americans,,,whatever...But never simply "Americans". And until they climb into the Melting Pot with the rest of us, they will always be apart. |

Blame is cathartic, but it inherently separates. Do they want to feel righteous, or do they want to end racial tensions? Can't have both. |

Neither does demanding that someone take responsibility for something they had nothing to do with. Or to admit to some secret leg up in the world without any evidence at all that actually occurred. Basically it's never a good idea to demand that anybody feel anything. People are going to feel how they feel, and working with that rather than against it is the fastest way to get past the bullshit. |

It's self perpetuating now. Museums don't cost zero. This is a living thing, and it won't die if we don't kill it. |

I don't think it can be fixed. To fix it would take more empathy for a longer time than the races seem able to sustain. As so purely a matter of human nature, it can't be fixed with legislation. I think we're stuck with each other. |

I'm not sure we can say that accurately. Things often change more slowly than we can tell. 60 years ago people were getting shot for wanting to attend the same schools, and lots of people were saying this is never going to change. 80 years ago blacks were portrayed in movies as idiotic clowns, whilst simultaneously being either ignored or brutalized in real life if they tried to express displeasure with the system. Back in the 60's people were saying 'Go slow'. Now people are saying 'Get over it, already!'. |

Like I said before. The only way to kill racism, is to breed it out. In 200 years, Americans will all look alike, we will be true mutts. Which means we will live longer as well! |

Yeah. Tell the Japanese that. It may work here but racism in America is a pittance of what it is in other parts of the world. |
