I understand that she was being "grossly generalistic", but is 'basket of deplorables' a thing?

Clinton says half of all Trump supporters belong in 'basket of deplorables'

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton caused an uproar late Friday after telling a fundraiser audience that half of Republican nominee Donald Trump's supporters could be described as part of a "basket of deplorables."

The former secretary of state, who described her own remarks as "grossly generalistic", said Trump had bolstered people who are "racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic, you name it." She did add that Trump's other supporters are frustrated by hard times and merit sympathy.

"They are just desparate for change," Clinton said. "They don't buy everything [Trump] says, but he seems to hold out some hope that their lives will be different.

Clinton was speaking at an LGBT fundraiser in New York City, where she encouraged supporters to "stage an intervention" if they have friends considering voting for the Republican nominee.

"That may be one conversion therapy I'd endorse," said Clinton, referring to a type of counseling designed to urge gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender children to change their sexual orientation. The Democratic nominee later clarified that she wants to end the practice.

Singer Barbra Streisand, who performed at the fundraiser, altered the lyrics of the Stephen Sondheim song "Send In The Clowns" to mock Trump, referring to the real estate mogul as a "sad, vulgar clown."

Trump spokesman Jason Miller said in a statement that Clinton had "revealed her true contempt for everyday Americans" and called the remarks an "inexcusable mistake."

This very minute I'm reading a year-old article that discusses possible obstacles to her victory that are much more serious than the email flap. Two in particular.

The greatest hurdle is what political scholars and watchers, etc, call the "time for a change" factor. "[P]residential candidates of the party in power for more than two terms consistently suffer an electoral penalty. In 2008, with George W Bush stepping aside after two terms, it was Republican John McCain hamstrung by this trend. In 2016, it is the Democratic Party nominee for president who will be on the wrong side of voter fatigue with the incumbent administration."

Another variable is voter perceptions of President Obama. His approval rating will carry a great deal of influence on who succeeds him.

"[T]he well-documented relationship between economic conditions and the performance of the incumbent president's party in the year of the election . . . were the economy to enter a slump during 2016, that development would tip the electoral playing field in favor of the eventual GOP nominee."

And the issue of, is America ready for a woman president.

More at https://theconversation.com/emails-wont-decide-clintons-fate-in-2016-46963.

As for the "deplorables" remark, I'm happy. A third-grader running for class president would be smart enough not to issue widespread insults to a "basket" of his/her voter base. Once again, she demonstrates the political deftness of a rhinoceros in a tea shop*. And then, she highlights her awareness that she is making a boo-boo by describing it as grossly generalistic. Like the listener who's in her basket is supposed to go, Oh, she's not referring to me then. Shoulda stopped at "gross"; at least that would have been honest.

Come on, Hil; show us some of the luv you've got deepsixed in that stone-cold heart of yours for America and Americans.

Decent enough

I think Mr. Krauthammer has a good point.

Charles is saying that this tidal wave of insults from the Clinton camp has set expectations so low for Mr. Trump that if he shows up at the debates as acts in a manner that is even remotely civil he could look wonderful.

What is, a classic wasn't it?

But Spiro Agnew wasn't trying to get elected was he? And, if I recall correctly, he was referring to the press.

A legion of horribles, hundreds in number, half naked or clad in costumes attic or biblical or wardrobed out of a fevered dream with the skins of animals and silk finery and pieces of uniform still tracked with the blood of prior owners, coats of slain dragoons, frogged and braided cavalry jackets, one in a stovepipe hat and one with an umbrella and one in white stockings and a bloodstained wedding veil and some in headgear or cranefeathers or rawhide helmets that bore the horns of bull or buffalo and one in a pigeontailed coat worn backwards and otherwise naked and one in the armor of a Spanish conquistador, the breastplate and pauldrons deeply dented with old blows of mace or sabre done in another country by men whose very bones were dust and many with their braids spliced up with the hair of other beasts until they trailed upon the ground and their horses' ears and tails worked with bits of brightly colored cloth and one whose horse's whole head was painted crimson red and all the horsemen's faces gaudy and grotesque with daubings like a company of mounted clowns, death hilarious, all howling in a barbarous tongue and riding down upon them like a horde from a hell more horrible yet than the brimstone land of Christian reckoning, screeching and yammering and clothed in smoke like those vaporous beings in regions beyond right knowing where the eye wanders and the lip jerks and drools.

I suppose if one were being kind, one could describe Trump supporters in that way.

She might as well have, given the damage it has done to her candidacy.

She's on the way out anyway.

Here's a picture taken two days ago at the National Baptist Association Convention, where she was the keynote speaker. So many people left that they had to move everyone forward and close off half the hall, and even after doing that, there was hardly anyone left:

Posted Image

The next day (yesterday) she held a press conference where she looked so tired and worn out that even the press were wondering if she was going to be able to stay awake through it..

Posted Image

Then today, the latest polls show she's losing her electoral college lead.

She's on the ropes, and headed down hill fast. She can't work more than 3 days in a row, then she has to take 4 or 5 days off. Her coughing is getting worse, and she's starting to look like a hag. (well... more than usual)...

I'll be surprised if the woman makes it until November without ending up in intensive care or a nursing home somewhere.

Actually, if you look at what Mitt said, it was a fact - he acknowledged that no matter what he did/said, 47% of the electorate wasn't going to vote for him. He was right. If you want to claim that his comments are an insult, I suppose you can. I choose not to.
Quote:

There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That's an entitlement. The government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what. And I mean the president starts off with 48, 49... he starts off with a huge number. These are people who pay no income tax. Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax. So our message of low taxes doesn't connect. So he'll be out there talking about tax cuts for the rich. ... My job is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives. What I have to do is convince the 5–10% in the center that are independents, that are thoughtful, that look at voting one way or the other depending upon in some cases emotion, whether they like the guy or not.

Not that it makes much of a difference, that comment was not intended for public consumption either, unlike Clinton's.
