Hey Jolly, Flood in Louisiana?

I don't promote ANY party line.

I also don't fall for the nonsense they spew out. My views are not shaped for me by a political party. I call it as I see it. I just don't try to straddle the fence the way some here do.

Also - I don't base my views on "beliefs". I based my views on the evidence and the facts. And the facts are, Obama attacked Bush for not rushing to Louisiana after Katrina hit, and democrats were in lock step picking up his attack and running with it. Now that Obama has his own Katrina, he plays golf and doesn't even so much as make a phone call to give a press release. and the democrats are falling all over themselves making excuses for him.

No "belief" to that.

Cats, all that might be true if the guy and his party hadn't kvetched as they did about Bush and Katrina.
Yes, okay. My greater point though is the constant never-ending avalanche of slant we can never get away from. The other guys can never do right and our guys can never do wrong. Our guys are on the side of the angels and only idiots and other-side-wingers defend the other guy, who is a rampant devil.

I'm fed up with it.

Try to stay focused - we're not talking about the entire history of political discourse here - we're talking about making excuses for Obama not going to Louisiana.

Me too. A great reason not to pick political sides.

It's stupid.

Excuse me, but nowhere in this did I "pick a side" politically. I addressed the political spin being used to make excuses, and hit it with the facts.

I think King Putt should stay on vacation, and stay out of the way.

Yes . . . what's he supposed to do, swim around going "tsk-tsk"? That's why there are phones. If the federal response is strong and effective -- a big if, I know -- then Louisiana can make better use of FEMA than they can of the President.

Does anyone know how much state resources need to go into a Presidential visit? For all we know, Obama talked to the Louisiana people and it was decided LA was too busy to deal with the circus BS of a Prez visit.

On the other hand, golfing seems a bit in-your-face.
That was what I posted, Cats. The governor asked Obama to wait a week before coming down. And he told Trump not to come for just a photo op. People in tragedies like this need practical and emotional support. A bigwig showing up may provide emotional support, but tax the physical resources. A leader has to weigh which is more important.

And it doesn't matter *what* decision Obama made. Those intent on criticizing him and Democrats in general will find something. As will those intent on criticizing Republicans, as we saw with the criticism of the Bush flyover of Katrina. The Katrina response effort was very flawed at the local, state and federal levels, but it was stupid to blame Bush for it. But that was the emotional side responding and people aren't rational when they're emotional.

We keep doing this. By "we" I mean all of us. We waste so much time and energy trying to find ways to take the other guy down. We're never going to get ourselves out of the holes we're in until we stop going back and rehashing old, and unimportant, history. Take the flood in Louisiana. We could be looking at this disaster and recognizing that the response is so much better than the Katrina response was. Some people died, yes, but those things are inevitable in this sort of natural disaster. But it's a small number (14?) when compared to the thousands that died in Katrina. People have been rescued and relocated, and they have food and water. It's a terrible tragedy, but the response is going so much more smoothly than it did in 2005. We learned something after Katrina and it shows.

Instead, we are arguing about nothing, throwing stones at the opposition to get a response. Sometimes I think we do it because it's so much easier than solving the real problems.

Let us begin anew, remembering on both sides that civility is not a sign of weakness.

Unless, of course, it's your guy who gets slammed, then anything from Plymouth Rock forward is fair game, right?

Never mind. If I weren't being driven insane by a barking-dog problem I've had for months, I would not have been so foolish as to engage with you in a political discussion. Won't happen again.

Louisiana BEGS Obama to visit

The governor of Louisiana didn't ask Obama to stay away for a couple of weeks until he was told Obama wasn't coming but Trump was.

I'm sure it appears that way to some, but there's really no way around it when one party accounts for 90% of the hypocrisy.

Wiki says 1.2 to 1.8 thousand. Another source says 986.

Not to minimize, but not to overstate, either.

The governor of Louisiana had nothing to say at all about Obama visiting until after he found out Obama wasn't coming. He was told that Obama had a "very tight schedule", so his claim that he wanted Obama to wait a couple of weeks was nothing more than him making excuses for Obama.

But it isn't what the governor thinks or wants that matters. What matters is what the PEOPLE think - the ones who are living through this disaster.

And what they think is that Obama can kiss their ass, so can the governor, and they are very happy that Trump took the time to come there and bring attention to the problem.

134,000 New Orleans homes damaged with Katrina.

110,000 Baton Rouge area homes damaged during this flood.
Sorry to read that the property damage is so widespread.
Hopefully the human casualty is much less.
It is.

Last time I checked, about 11. That will probably go up a little, as waters recede.

I'm sorry, but a lot of that is absolute bullshiite.

1. Look at how things flooded - New Orleans was rapidly flooded by a wall of water after a levee break. The area around Baton Rouge was flooded by rainwater. The time between when the water started and when things went under were vastly different.

2. Depth of flood waters. In N.O., houses barely had their roofs sticking out of the water. Around B.R. and Lafayette, mmost places took on 2-4 feet, or less.

3. Who flooded. The elephant in the room nobody is talking about. Katrina flooded the 9th ward and most of the victims were poor people. The current flood has hit a lot of middle class people. As a group, they are smarter and have more resources. A lot of them took care of themselves, rather than waiting for someone else to do it for them.

4. Where the flood occurred. A lot of suburbs and rural areas, not as much in the middle of the city. Because of that, lots of neighbors have boats, especially shallow draft boats for duck hunting and hunting in the Basin, along with having 4WD trucks to pull and position them. Even ATVs made to run in three feet of water are common.

5. Private response. I don't know of a church or synagogue in Baton Rouge or Lafayette that isn't doing some type of disaster relief. Need a place to house your pet? Go to the First Baptist church in Zachary. Need a hot meal? The Amish church serves 3 hot meals a day. Need bleach, a mop bucket, a mop and the labor to help clean up? You got your choicce of the LSU baseball team or a myriad of church youth groups. As the waters go down, friends, neighbors and absolute strangers are showing up to help gut and clean up houses.

I'll give you an example...My SIL was on her way home from work at the hospital after a 12 hour shift on the cabbage patch, when she noticed a little old lady pushing a wheelbarrow full of trash. She stopped to ask her if she needed help and the lady told her not really. She was 81 and slower than she used to be, but with the help of her neighbors she was managing. She then stopped and looked at my SIL and told her that if she wanted to do something, could she please bring her a few sandwiches so she could feed the people helping her? My SIL left and came back with enough food and bottled water to feed the lady and her crew supper and enough for the next day.

Quote:

In a 16-page guidance issued Tuesday, the Obama administration, led by the Justice Department, warned Louisiana recipients of federal disaster assistance against engaging in “unlawful discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin (including limited English proficiency).”

The guidance’s frameworks “highlight the importance of complying with nondiscrimination requirements of civil rights statutes, addressing the needs of the whole community, and ensuring equal opportunity to access recovery efforts.”

Needless to say, some Louisiana residents were offended, including the American Conservative’s Rod Dreher, who took umbrage at receiving an anti-discrimination lecture from Washington, D.C., as locals struggle to rescue, house and feed their neighbors.

“[E]verywhere you look you can find black folks and white folks loving on each other, helping each other through this crisis,” Mr. Dreher said in a Thursday post.
...
The administration guidance cited instances of discrimination in Gulf Coast states after Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita in 2005, such as “numerous media reports [that] showed images of African Americans stranded on roofs in New Orleans.”

“These images exposed significant inequalities in access to emergency response and recovery efforts,” said the guidance.

The memo also cited an ad aimed at evacuees saying that the renter preferred “two white females.”

Mr. Dreher said such discrimination is wrong and Louisianans need to “own our mistakes,” but that residents knee-deep in rescue efforts don’t appreciate being painted with the administration’s broad brush.

He quoted an email from a local named Jimmy who said, “Not many things get me seething, but this does,” calling Obama administration officials “dividers instead of unites.”

“Look no further than this ‘guidance’ press release telling us in the middle of it to be sure not to be racist, y’all,” said the email.
