The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |

This kind of thing does no good, Copper. You can't accuse CNN of heaping coals and then give Fox breathing room. Even if it's true, it's no part of a responsible press' function to aggrandize this kind of tabloid crap. We need more than ever to maintain calm and common sense. |

If the president has been irresponsible it is up to the responsible press to call him on it. Otherwise we are just another banana republic. |

Possibly; it depends on the supposed irresponsibility. It's no part of the press responsibility to leap on every utterance of a president they have decided to dislike, and gussy it up with graphics and pictures of the Capitol to make it look like responsible reportage. One can find other sources who praise what he says just by putting on a different spin; there's reportage and there's yellow journalism. |

every utterance? Not really. Mr. Hume accusing is the president of being sympathetic to a movement that arguably contributed to the deaths of public servants. The president's sympathy is clear. The intent of blm may or may not be. The lack of reporting is more of a problem than the reporting. |

And the NY Times wrote about his visit in London with young people in April: "President Obama offered an indirect critique of the Black Lives Matter movement during a town-hall-style event here on Saturday, encouraging activists to engage with the political process and cautioning them that social change can be a slow and incremental process. "He praised the movement as "really effective in bringing attention to problems," but said young activists should be more willing to work with political leaders to craft solutions instead of criticizing from outside the political process. "Once you’ve highlighted an issue and brought it to people’s attention . . . then you can’t just keep on yelling at them," Mr. Obama said. "And you can’t refuse to meet because that might compromise the purity of your position," he continued. "It was not the first time that he has cautioned Black Lives Matter activists that social change cannot happen overnight." Presidents famously -- or notoriously -- cannot please all of the people all of the time. Somebody is going to hate on them no matter what they say or do. It depends on who you listen to. I don't know what you mean by the lack of reporting being a problem. Would the manner of reporting on Obama's every syllable have saved any of those citizens or cops? |

every syllable? Good point, it is not important to report on every syllable. However, the syllables that could be interpreted as advocating murder of police deserve some attention. After watching the news for the last couple hours I'm not too worried about it. Apparently there are a lot of people that have noticed this advocacy. |

I haven't watched the news at all, so I'm at a disadvantage. If you and others are hearing the President of the United States advocate the murder of police, then so be it. I was going to end by saying 'stranger things have happened', but I don't think they have. Okay, I'm being snotty, but I'm starting to feel like that comic on SNL (?) who made his eyeballs roll around in his head. |

I don't think anyone is reporting such a blatant advocacy. But yes, that is the general idea. The police don't like it at all. |
