A good article! I like his general theme a lot; it kind of caps a conclusion I had been floating toward without any real definition: "The idea that Americans are closet libertarians who desire a regime of economic liberalism and a hands-off approach to social questions is not supported by the evidence." Pretty mild for a coup-de-grace moment - for me, anyway, a lifelong stubborn clinger to libertarian ideals. It turns out "ideals" is pretty much where they have always remained. Sad, but bracing in that clean crispness you feel when you sit down in the dentist's chair. Here's the thing: I know nothing about the LV LP convention except what Williamson writes, so this may not be accurate. But if his description is comprehensive, it is obvious why the LP keeps falling on its face. The followers and the agenda in Vegas fit exactly the mindset of a group that, if it knows anything, knows it is irrevelant. If I were King of the Libertarian Party -- which thank god I'm not, life is hard enough as it is -- I would tear it down and rebuild it from the ground up, wherein every act would be that of a group that perceives itself as Key to Everything. A whole nuther attitude. Maybe it wouldn't be in actuality, but it wouldn't accept being treated in any other way, and I'd instill the unmovable conviction in the hearts of my Or die trying, which under present conditions is most likely. What we have now, and have had, is a group that feels so sidelined that it's okay to fiddle-faddle around with issues that don't matter much anyway, because really, who cares about us. So we can do all this silly stuff without fear of condemnation. We are indulged because we are (almost) invisible. We're the mouse that keeps trying to roar, but can't get past a throaty squeak. Thank you, George. I have a request. You post many articles that are necessary and well-written (IMHO), but the first thing I always do is go to the website and identify the writer. Would you consider in the future slugging the writer's name in at the top of your post? Because of course it matters, who the author is. Thank you, no pressure. |

Sounds like we've gone completely off the rails with presumption here. Just saying that the Libertarian party feels so sidelined that they don't take their issues seriously because "that's what it looks like to me" isn't proof of anything. It even defies common sense; I'm sure the guys in the party sure take themselves pretty seriously and consider their platform "relevant." Anyway, regarding the premise of the article, was there supposed to be some massive Libertarian showing this year? I never got that vibe. |

I just want Johnson/Weld to get to 15% so they are in the debates. Let it go from there. |

They get 15% and they'll get much more than that in the elections. Most of it's self-fulfulling; if the media covered third parties enough they'd have no problem breaking in. |

I'm still somewhat hopeful the Better for America organization will be able to run an independent candidate. Mitch Daniels would make a great one, but he'll likely stay at Purdue. Kasich would be a good pick too. If that fizzles, then Libertarian it is for me. |
