As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

This is very bad. If this doesn't lead to an over reaction it will be a miracle.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

People want to start a civil war. And they feel encouraged to do it by our social/media ideas of oppressed vs oppressor, which most of us are too self-interested to question. We have a vicious and violent cultural idea which destroys any individual who thinks Incorrect thoughts about how much racism actually matters. There's no margin in being Incorrect. And now there's no margin in being a cop.

CNN loves this.

Absolutely loves it.

And will continue to encourage it.

Hmmm....

I'll be at the State Police Academy in Baton Rouge this week.

Think I'll swap out my Miss Elsie P for the Jericho. And maybe an AR-15 in the trunk. If I have a chance of walking into a gunfight, I definitely want to be one of the ones shooting...

No, I don't think "people" want to start a "civil war."

A few nut jobs don't qualify as "people," and calling isolated shooting incidents "civil war" is a rhetoric that does more harm than good.

Screw CNN. Their reporting is irresponsible and they suck even before this anyway.

They're still isolated, and still not a "civil war."

Both of you are absolutely right. But I don't have a clue how to change the situation.

Earlier today I suggested that it would be useful for citizens to focus on their own patch, and to cease assuming that their patch is the same as Dallas or Baton Rouge or Schenectady. Or Lancaster County. That way, instead of being convinced that "this country" is going to perdition, which the TV strives relentlessly to cram into our brains, the citizen can honestly say, it's terrible that Dallas, etc are like that, but honestly My Town, USA isn't and never has been. Or My Town is even worse; whatever.

I will probably repeat this until y'all are bored to screaming point, but I truly believe that our salvation rests with each and every one of us taking charge of our own beliefs, our own behaviors, our own informed opinions, and our own intentions. When CNN drenches us in dire dreadfulness, we must be equipped to judge them accurately.

Horace's presenting of that study is a great, great example of this.

Another great one was Copper shaking the hand of the airport cop. Who knows what effect that had on the man's outlook!

Witness Brady Vancel told WAFB that he saw two people shooting at each other before authorities even arrived.

“There was multiple gunshots going back and forth and back and forth before any police ever showed up. This was not a come-at-police situation,” Vancel said. “They weren’t targeting police at first, I don’t assume so, because these were men out here shooting at each other in an empty parking lot until the police showed and then it turned into a gun battle, I’m guessing to try to get themselves free or get out of the situation.”
Screw CNN. It is possible that the eye-witness got it wrong, but dang it I wish all these "news organizations" can wait a bit and get the facts straight before speculating on motives. :veryangry:

Silence becomes the answer. It's really weird. Because the silence of the masses seems impossible. That's why we're not getting off this planet.

I'm sure that would've worked in the case of the LA officer shootings. Good call, Ax.

We've go too much news. We're all living in a fish bowl. Time to throw the TV out the window. FWIW: I did it when I lived in NYC--I had no TV or radio and the world was quite a nice place to live in.

LA Times: The gunman was identified as Gavin E. Long, a 29-year-old from Kansas City, Missouri, a U.S. law enforcement official said. Another law enforcement official identified him as “a black separatist.”

No other details.

Wiki: According to the 2010 the racial makeup of the city was 50.4% Black or African American, 40.8% White, 0.5% Native American, 3.5% Asian, and 1.3% from two or more races.

From some source, I forget: Black officers made up just 30 percent of the Baton Rouge police force in 2013, the last year data were available, even though black residents comprised 55 percent of the city’s population, according to a review of federal data last year by Governing magazine. Baton Rouge is among just six majority-black cities with populations over 100,000 that have majority-white police forces.

The Baton Rouge gunman has been identified as Gavin Eugene Long, according to multiple news outlets Sunday afternoon.

Citing unnamed "sources," CBS News reported that Mr. Long was a black man from Kansas City, Missouri, who committed the ambush on his 29th birthday. The network also identified him as an ex-Marine.

NBC News reported the same name some moments later, citing "several law enforcement officials."

The Wall Street Journal reported, citing "a person briefed on the investigation," that the suspect had ties to “an antigovernment group called the New Freedom Group.” MSNBC also reported relationships with a different anti-government group, the Sovereign Citizens.

With all this going on, it will take a while to sort out his motivation. Race? Veteran with mental health issues? Anti-government?
Let us begin anew, remembering on both sides that civility is not a sign of weakness.

Another cop killed in Kansas City today while responding to a call. Two suspects jumped out of a car and opened fire on him.

That's the 31st cop this year.
