HOLY CARP!!!
From Facebook:

So apparently today they're going to have him try walking a little!

(I understand there's a convenience store next door to the hospital so if any of you need any milk, speak up now, and i'll have him get it for you as long as he's up anyway......)

What's the big rush?

That seems too soon. Way too soon.

That is great news!

Not surprising they are getting him up and moving; lying in bed is not good for you in a lot of ways...

Okay . . . if y'all say so; I'm not medically trained.

But it sure seems soon after subjecting his body to such a significant trauma.

I'm no medical professional, but I keep hearing that the sooner you get vertical, the better. (our library lends out medical equipment, and so I've heard lots of post op stories - nothing as serious as Jon's procedure, but it's certainly a common theme)

Well, for starters, I assume that the transplant folks have done this before. :sombrero:

The problems with laying around a lot, as I understand them, are loss of muscle and also increased risk of blood clots.

Quote:

Patients' age and the length of bed rest in the ICU were the most important factors affecting muscle weakness. For every day of bed rest in the ICU, patients had 3 percent to 11 percent less muscle strength in the months after they left the hospital, according to the study in the April issue of Critical Care Medicine.

"Even a single day of bed rest in the ICU has a lasting impact on weakness, which impacts patients' physical functioning and quality of life," senior author Dr. Dale Needham, an associate professor of medicine and of physical medicine and rehabilitation, said in a Hopkins news release.

"We previously thought that bed rest and sedation in an ICU were helpful for patients, but we're finding this approach to care is actually harmful to the long-term recovery of many," he added.

These findings show that ICU patients need to be kept as active as possible, according to the researchers.

"Nothing is free of risk in the ICU, but the harms of bed rest far exceed the potential harms of giving these patients rehabilitation delivered by a skilled clinical team - even when patients are very sick and on life support," Needham said.

Hope George and/or bach chime in....

In the other thread, bach posted something like "just woke up and reading through this thread" and at first I read it as "Jon woke up and reading through this thread" and I thought "holy crap, didn't take him long to make it back onto TNCR!" :P

Yes. If they are getting him up today it is a very good sign.

Thanks for the update.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy
