What I admire so much, is Jon's bravery. He has mentioned his condition infrequently, and never once, never, did I read any sense of complaining, anger, fear, anxiety. If it were me, frankly, I'd be a basket case waiting for that phone call, and knowing the dangers as well as the incredible pain I was about to go through.

An amazing, courageous man. And I agree, he will surprise everyone with how quickly he mends, and how quickly he gets back up to full speed and then plus some!
He is a really good dood.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

Just woke and going through the thread.

Great to hear surgery went well.

Still has rocky road of post op. But at least the technical part went well.

HOLY CARP!!!
Glad Jon made it out of surgery. Hope he continues to do well.

I've been to a couple of lectures by Dr. Joel Cooper, the surgeon who pioneered the double lung transplant and came up with the idea of the omentum wrap. Amazing surgery.
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

This will sound so wrong, so put up with me.

We've had our share of tragedies here: Phlebas, Apple, Vince...

Yet, when it happens, we give each other a virtual hug, mourn and weep. To my knowledge, we have never been in a situation where we sit and worry, waiting for some news.

I hate this.
I hate not knowing, but—probably it's my total ignorance here—I'm not at all worried. I think that this is a profound transition, sure, and hard as hell to go through, but I think after all's done he's going to be fine.

It's not wishful thinking, I just really believe it.
Yes, I do, too. He's not done here yet. :)

Lung transplant surgery video found on YouTube.
WARNING: video of real surgery, very graphic, do not watch if you're squeamish
That's an old video from the 1980's ... haven't been able to find lung transplant surgery video that's more recent.

Jon and I are usually the first ones up as far as TNCR goes, and he usually posts something before I do.

I have great joy for him this morning, but I'm missing his early post(s). :(

Thanks for finding that, Ax. It reinforces how damn complicated this surgery is. It also talks about the physiologic stresses it places on the patient.

That's why I specified "as far as TNCR goes". Klaus will post at that hour sometimes, but I don't think you do very often.

We need an update today.
The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy
