So glad to hear he's through with the surgery. One giant step.

I'm with Aqua on this. I totally believe Jon will pull through this. He's a tough cookie, and it sounds like he's been doing everything he should, in preparation for this.

Thanks justme, for reaching out and sharing the good news :)

This will sound so wrong, so put up with me.

We've had our share of tragedies here: Phlebas, Apple, Vince...

Yet, when it happens, we give each other a virtual hug, mourn and weep. To my knowledge, we have never been in a situation where we sit and worry, waiting for some news.

I hate this.
I hate not knowing, but—probably it's my total ignorance here—I'm not at all worried. I think that this is a profound transition, sure, and hard as hell to go through, but I think after all's done he's going to be fine.

It's not wishful thinking, I just really believe it.
Like spiritually?
Like literally.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

I dunno, I just believe it in much the same way that I believe Pol Pot was a bad guy. Like I said, it's not wishful thinking, I'm just pretty darn sure about it.

I'm actually in the same boat as Aqua. Maybe I'm being ignorant as well, but I was never worried either.

In 2016, I just assumed he was no more likely not to make it through an organ transplant than any other member is likely to be hit by a car today. Maybe these procedures are a lot more dangerous than I assumed, but if so, ignorance is bliss.

I hear ya. I never worry about stuff either. Which is to say "always", especially when trying to fall asleep.

It's bliss, but it's also ignorance.

Anyway let's explore that. Is ignorance bliss? Only because we don't want to know what hurts us. So knowledge tends towards the stuff that doesn't hurt us, or just the stuff that helps us. Ignorance is bliss. We believe what we want to believe.

Is ignorance bliss?

Ignorance is ignorance.

A lung transplant can improve your quality of life and extend your lifespan. The first year after the transplant is the most critical. This is when the risk of complications is highest.

In recent years, short-term survival after lung transplant has improved. Recent data on single-lung transplants show that:
•About 78 percent of patients survive the first year
•About 63 percent of patients survive 3 years
•About 51 percent of patients survive 5 years

Survival rates for double-lung transplants are slightly better. Recent data show that the median survival for single-lung recipients is 4.6 years. The median survival for double-lung recipients is 6.6 years. Talk with your doctor about what these figures may mean for you.

What's the difference between ignorance and apathy?
I don't know and I don't care.

I was referring more specifically to the surgery itself. It just never occurred to me that he wouldn't make it through the surgery. I assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that the survival rate in 2016 USA is more or less 100%.

Lung surgery is a funny thing. It cuts deep. God knows what Jon just looked like a few hours ago. It would be censored on every mainstream site.

I never doubted the severity of the surgery. I just believe he's ultimately going to be okay, because I do. Fuck it if anyone has a problem with that.

Most likely jon will make it through just fine.

Heck, I expect jon to out-perform the "median" and out-perform the "average" lung transplant patients.

Why? He's young (compared to other lung transplant patients), he's smart, he's informed, he's been living well most of his life, he's disciplined when it comes to the important stuff, he has good things to look forward to in life (motivation to really stay alive for a long time), he has the means to access some the best medical care the world has to offer ...

All that says he'll do A LOT BETTER than the most other patients going through the same procedure.

He probably won't get to imbibe anymore, so, what the heck, I will raise a glass for him tonight, and you all are welcome to join me.

And he gets free medical advice from trained and untrained personnel here.

Of course we want to know what hurts us. But some knowledge, some little knowledge, can hurt us more than pure ignorance. We need to find a personal, comfortable balance. Ignorance is not bliss: selective ignorance perhaps meets that mark.

And sometimes you just follow your gut instincts. No science there, no religious faith, just pure gut. In my experience, it's often right. Perhaps that's my mix of selective ignorance and knowledge. To each their own.

And my gut says Jon is going to be ok.

When Jon wakes up tomorrow, everyone will be amazed at the three words he says, to those closest to him.
Jon will focus upon his wonderful family, they will lean down ,waiting to hear those three most important words, and Jon will whisper:
Quote:

vote. . . for. . . Trump. . . :silly:

What I admire so much, is Jon's bravery. He has mentioned his condition infrequently, and never once, never, did I read any sense of complaining, anger, fear, anxiety. If it were me, frankly, I'd be a basket case waiting for that phone call, and knowing the dangers as well as the incredible pain I was about to go through.

An amazing, courageous man. And I agree, he will surprise everyone with how quickly he mends, and how quickly he gets back up to full speed and then plus some!
