HOLY CARP!!!
Was watching a Last Week Tonight YouTube clip, and John Oliver made a joke about how Atticus Finch turned out to be racist. I googled this, and found a couple articles.

Has anyone read "Go Set a Watchman"?

I guess being from the North--I never though he wasn't and I guess that's what made TKM for me such a great book. I saw the beauty in the book being not Atticus' greatness, but he failing and the good-truth-right overcoming all the wrong in the world. TKM is a Christian tale of sin and the irresistible power of the goodness of God's grace, not a cartoon about a Liberal Superhero.

I started Go Set A Watchman but was bored silly.

TomK is right. Atticus just a man. A man with character and integrity. And a man who saw past the status quo and was determined to do his small part to help make the world a better place.

I believe we should all be doing that. And, truly, I believe most of us are. Good trumps evil and we need to keep it that way.

BTW I read Gone With the Wind in high school. A few years ago I re-read it only to find out it had a few dirty sections in it.

I read Go Set, audio book anyway. I did not see Atticus as a racist, but as a man who felt responsible for guiding the things he saw coming. He did so by engagement with people he did not necessarily agree with. He had a perspective one might expect of someone growing up and living where and when he did.

I took the book to illustrate the complexities of societal change, although I am unsure Lee knew quite what she really wanted to say. The train metaphor was excellent.

Mik, maybe I should try it again in audio. Do you think it's worth the buy? I use Audible

Keep going. It starts very slowly.
