Turkey's PM has denounced an "illegal action" by a military "group", with bridges closed in Istanbul and aircraft flying low over the capital, Ankara.

Binali Yildirim said the military action was not authorised but it was not a coup. He said that the government remained in charge.

Traffic has been stopped from crossing both the Bosphorus and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges in Istanbul.
There are also reports of gunshots in the capital Ankara.

What's going on? Is the coup happening or not? The news are rather contradictory.

From The Atlantic, 4PM: Here’s what we know:

—The Turkish military appears to be staging an attempted coup against the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

—The military said it was taking over to preserve “democratic order.” Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said the government would not allow the coup to succeed.

-----------------

From Daily Sabah, 18 hours ago: Turkey's Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım late Friday said a group within Turkey's military was engaged in what appeared to be an attempted coup.

Yıldırım said on television: "It is correct that there was an attempt."

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was reported to be safe, however the official Anadolu Agency reported that the Turkish Chief of Staff Hulusi Akar was taken hostage by a group within the military.

Yıldırım didn't provide details, but said Turkey would never allow any "initiative that would interrupt democracy."

"Those who are in this illegal act will pay the highest price," he added.

Earlier, military jets were heard flying over the capital, Ankara.

Media reports said ambulances were seen in front of the Turkey's military headquarters.

Justice Minister Bozdağ also confirmed that a group tried to stage a coup and assured that the government is on duty.

Arrest warrants were issued for the soldiers who are involved in the coup attempt.

The entrance to the Atatürk International Airport in Istanbul was closed while military tanks were deployed outside the airport.

Nationalist Movement Party leader Devlet Bahçeli called the PM, saying the attempt is unacceptable and his party stands with gov't.

Everybody needs a good night's rest to think this over a bit.

FWIW: Coups in the Middle East are rarely a good thing.

Turkey isn't exactly the Middle East. It's part of NATO. America has air bases and missiles there. This is a pretty big deal if it's actually happening.

I wonder if Mr. Obama will take sides.

I wonder if he will support the side he picks or if he will manage to make both sides hate him.

If he draws a red line we'll know.

Rumor has it that Erdogan himself staged the coup. Doesn't sound very plausible to me right now, but it does certainly give him a nice excuse to remove a lot of people he doesn't like.

What's the more implausible conspiracy, an autocrat staging a surprise military coup, or an entire military staging a real surprise coup? (Keeping in mind that it failed.)

All flights banned from turkey.

I'm assuming that this is a slap on the face to Erdogan for his chutzpah. The excuse about lax security is nonsense. There r flights to tel aviv. That's a gold standard when judging aviation security.

Given Erdogan's character, both a real coup or a staged coup are entirely plausible.
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!
