“Under The Sun”: An Interesting And Unusual Documentary About North Korea

A Russian film maker made a doc offering a rare glimpse into a secretive and paranoid North Korea.

“Under the Sun” follows a typical Pyongyang family’s life: a dad, mom, and an angelic eight year old named Zin-Mi. The director allowed his N. Korean handlers/censors to determine who the subjects were and the subject matter. This is where large revealing cracks show up. The gov’t handlers frequently interrupt the film by walking right into the film and demanding that a scene be reshot with new dialogue and restaging to please the Communist party rulers. So you see the original scene followed by the interruption and then the new restaged scene. The director didn’t cut out the original scene in post-production editing. He just left it intact for everyone to see and it caused some audience giggles. I can’t recall seeing this type of film editing occur before. In school, Zin-Mi and class mates must endure incessant drilling of anti-American and anti-Japanese propaganda. Americans are “cowards” and the Japanese are “aggressors”. It’s later revealed that the school she attends, where she lives, and what her parents do for a living are a choreographed fraud.

North Korea is one scary country. This movie will never be shown there. Pyongyang street scenes are shown. Skyline shots show the Ryuqyong Hotel, a high rise that looks like a space ship. It’s very impressive looking, and looks like it doesn’t belong in N.K. In Korean and subtitled in English.

I'll never forget a video (can't find it now) that showed a policewoman in Pyongyang directing traffic. She was quite comely, white hat, gloves, properly modest skirt, etc.

She held up her white-gloved hand, indicating that traffic should stop, and with her other hand, she hurried the intersecting traffic through the intersection. Blowing her whistle, she encouraged the traffic to move.

As the camera pulled back from its tight zoom, it was apparent that there was no traffic at the intersection. Indeed, there were no cars at all.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

And I'll add that some of the North Korean girls in the movie are really cute.

Most likely you’re going to have to see it at an art house movie theater.

Art house movie theaters show foreign, independent, and vintage classic movies but not recent Hollywood releases. These theaters are usually independently owned and located in down town areas of cities. Some universities operate movie theaters and they cater the movies to the general public as well as their own students. It’s a win/win situation. The university makes some money and the students get “hands on” experience in running all aspects of a theater.

There are a few of them where I live in the Chicago area. You live in Toronto, right? There should be some in your city. I don’t know if “Under The Sun” is available through Netflix.
