Omar the Club Regular

HOLY CARP!!!
It seems the shooter was a club regular--maybe a closeted gay.

Quote:

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The FBI is investigating reports that Orlando gunman Omar Mateen had been a regular at the gay nightclub he attacked and had used gay dating apps, a U.S. official briefed on the case said Tuesday.

A number of possible explanations and motives for the bloodbath that left 49 victims dead have emerged, with Mateen professing allegiance to the Islamic State group, his ex-wife saying he was mentally ill, and his father suggesting he was driven by hatred of gays.

The picture grew more complex as patrons of the Pulse came forward to say that they had seen the 29-year-old American-born Muslim there a number of times or that he had been using gay dating apps. Mateen had a wife and 3-year-old son.

Jim Van Horn, 71, said Mateen was a regular at the club. "He was trying to pick up people. Men," Van Horn told The Associated Press. While acknowledging he didn't know Mateen well, Van Horn said: "I think it's possible that he was trying to deal with his inner demons, of trying to get rid of his anger of homosexuality."

Yeah, the thought crossed my mind ... that the shooter was a closeted gay, and that lacking a peaceful way to come to terms with his true sexuality, he went nuts and shot up the club.

Doesn't explain his use of "gay dating apps" as reported in TomK's article.

Somewhere, and I can't find it again, dammit, I read that he had made "surveillance "trips to Disney and Disney reported it to the FBI - in April.

Doesn't really cover his getting carried out drunk either.

He wasn't exactly a devout Muslim, was he?

The Disney trips are mentioned in the CNN piece.

But I was responding to the OP, which was about him possibly struggling with being gay.

As D'Oh remarked, at a minimum he doesn't exactly seem like a devout Muslim, at least as far as alcohol is concerned....and maybe other things.

This is a puzzle that will assemble itself slowly over time.

More likely this will be a puzzle that will be hammered into producing the desired picture even if the pieces don't fit.

I may have misread this:
Quote:

Disney security officials have told the FBI they believe that Mateen made another visit to Disney World on April 26 to conduct reconnaissance, the law enforcement official said.
As saying they reported it in April.

My bad.

I heard much of the story of one of the survivors that was broadcast live a little while ago. She was one of the people in the bathroom. She said he wanted America to stop bombing his country. She didn't mention anything about Islam.

He also asked if there were any blacks in the group (the people who had run to the bathroom to escape). One guy finally said "there are 6 or 7 of us". The shooter said he didn't have a problem with the blacks, he was targeting the white Americans.

A complicated case, indeed.

Odd. The story you linked in the other thread details a young black guy that was also trapped in the bathroom and wound up being killed.

There's going to be a lot of contradictory stories coming out of this, I'm afraid.

The stuff he came out with in the 9-11 call didn't make any sense. He said he supported ISIS, but then he said he supported a Muslim who died fighting ISIS, and he also mentioned the Boston bombers.

It sounds as though he was just latching on to all kinds of Islamist crap in his desire to kill lots of people.

There's going to be a lot of contradictory stories coming out of this, I'm afraid.
Some of the people in the bathroom were already dead from the first wave of gunfire, according to the survivor. I picked up the story after the shooter came back in the bathroom and was making the calls to 911. That's when she said he asked the question about blacks. Might be a case of shoot first, ask questions later. He definitely wasn't the typical suicide shooter.

There's just information here and not a lot of logic.... let's face it, the guy was bat**** crazy and we may never understand where his thinking went south...

edit: WaPo has a story about the survivor.

Quote:

At one point, while about two dozen hostages were in the bathrooms inside Pulse, Carter said the gunman asked if there were any black people in the room. When one man said yes, the shooter said, “You know I don’t have a problem with black people,” Carter recalled during a news conference. “This is about my country,” Mateen said. “You guys suffered enough.”

These comments further add to the uncertainty regarding what may have inspired the gunman, 29-year-old Omar Mateen, who was born in the United States to parents from Afghanistan. At various points, Mateen invoked opposing militant groups, making “inflammatory and contradictory” comments, said FBI Director James B. Comey.

I think you're right about understanding... The call to 911 was made at 2:21, but the guy in the second story was still texting his mom 30 minutes later, so he would have been killed after the first wave of gunfire and likely after the shooter asked about blacks.

after the shooter asked about blacks.
What?

So now it's a Islamic jihadist, homophobic (or not), racist killing?

Whoa.

I'm pretty sure Hillary Clinton told him to do it.
