Last month we learned that the radar on the F-35 has to be rebooted every now and then. Just what I'd like on a mission.

The Lockheed Martin plane, which has been in development since 2001 and is the most software-driven warplane ever built, has experienced several failures and setbacks that have seen its cost balloon and its delivery delayed. Each jet is now expected to cost about £100m.

From structural problems that made it vulnerable to lightning strikes – ironic given it’s called the Lightning II – to weight issues, bugs within its software and its complete lack of cyber security testing, the plane has caused concern among the UK, US and other buyers. And now a glitch with the radar, which appeared late last year, could potentially hinder its performance against less developed fighter jets.

US air force major general Harrigian told analyst firm IHS Jane’s: “What would happen is they’d get a signal that says either a radar degrade or a radar fail – something that would force us to restart the radar.

“Lockheed Martin discovered the root cause, and now they’re in the process of making sure they take that solution and run it through the [software testing] lab.”

But wait! there's more!

Now, a new report says problems with its logistics software system could ground the entire fleet.

The issue is with what the Department of Defense officials call the 'brains' of plane, also known as the Autonomic Logistics Information System (ALIS).

A Government Accountability Office report says a failure 'could take the entire fleet offline' because there is no backup system.

The report also says a lack of testing done of the software will mean it's not ready for its deployment by the Air Force in August and the Navy in 2018.

The 'brains' of the F35 are one of three major components, with the other two being the engine and airframe.

CNN points out that the software runs on ground computers rather than operating on the plane itself.

It is designed to support operations, mission planning and to spot any maintenance issues with the vehicle.

'Program officials said that if ALIS is not fully functional, the F-35 could not be operated as frequently as intended,' the report said.
Isn't it time to stop throwing money at this turkey?

Boffins are a necessary evil in the development and use of modern military hardware. Sounds like Lockheed has a bad bunch of geeks.

On another note, the "computer" on an A-6 used to get hung up, and would have to be kicked to free up the drum during an attack run. Ain't technology wonderful?

HOLY CARP!!!
The Raptor is already considered obsolete by the Air Force, especially with regards to its stealth capabilities. The F-35 has proven itself a bust thus far. The Air Force and Navy now want 6th generation fighters: stealthier, longer range, cyber hardened, and multiple weapons packages including heat-efficient lasers.

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

How long before Gen 6 fighters are online? 20 years? More?

One only needs to look at the F-35 timeline to speculate.

They're aiming for 2030(ish). Time and budget of course are entirely unpredictable when it comes to aircraft procurement, so it's safe to say that 2030 won't happen.

It's actually a shame the F-35 has turned out so badly. The inspiration was the F-4 Phantom, a design so outstanding and yet inexpensive (each plane cost less than $20 million in today's dollars) that it was adopted by the Navy, the Air Force and the Marines. The F-35 program was aiming to provide the same kind versatile, multi-service, yet inexpensive jet. But the requirements of each service have advanced so much since the Phantom that it's impossible for a single fighter design, despite service-specific modifications, to fulfill them all well without significant compromise and expense. (Of course, apart from this the entire procurement and production process was a complete clusterfvck and have ironically made the F-35 the most expensive weapons system in history). For the 6th generation fighter, the Air Force and Navy are going back to separate designs.

And don't forget drones...

John McCain: "The F-35 is a scandal and a tragedy."

Quote:

Sen. John McCain slammed the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter's troubled history Tuesday, saying it "has been both a scandal and a tragedy with respect to cost, schedule and performance."

The development of the Joint Strike Fighter, a fifth-generation stealth jet, has been beset by spiraling costs and schedule delays. The program's price tag is nearly $400 billion for 2,457 planes -- almost twice the initial estimate.

McCain, an Arizona Republican, called the cost overruns "disgraceful" and noted that the F-35 program had originally promised 1,013 fighters by fiscal year 2016 but had only delivered 179.

McCain added that the plane's delays meant that "the last F-35 will be delivered in 2040," and given that potential adversaries like China and Russia were investing in modern aircraft technology, he said he "cannot fathom how this strategy makes any sense."

He made the comments while chairing a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on the F-35.

In his testimony, the F-35 program's executive officer, Lt. Gen. Christopher Bogdan acknowledged the problematic development, saying it was sometimes "slower" than he would like. But he defended the current status of the plane, adding that he was "confident the current risks and issues we face can be resolved and we'll be able to overcome future problems and deliver the F-35's full combat capability."
