HOLY CARP!!! Posts: 12,670 Group: Members Member #306 Joined: January 1, 2006	Preface: I'm terrible at math. As in, I had to take Algebra 2 twice and struggled horrible with Algebra 1. Is it 63? Wait. I thought the last was a + sign. So I change it to 49. I got confused. I'm sure that's still incorrect, but at least I read everything correctly. Edited by LWpianistin, Feb 7 2016, 06:22 PM.

It stands for "Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, and Addition and Subtraction". This tells you the ranks of the operations: Parentheses outrank exponents, which outrank multiplication and division (but multiplication and division are at the same rank), and these two outrank addition and subtraction (which are together on the bottom rank). When you have a bunch of operations of the same rank, you just operate from left to right. For instance, 15 ÷ 3 × 4 is not 15 ÷ 12, but is rather 5 × 4, because, going from left to right, you get to the division first. So 7 + 7 ÷ 7 + 7 x 7 - 7 Means, from left to right, you divide first (7 ÷ 7). That's 1. Then you multiply (7 x 7). That's 49. That means 7 + 1 + 49 - 7. 50
