A sour day

A sourdough day it is. Saved some dough for pizza crusts tomorrow. I don't usually bake on the weekend, so this is an opportunity for some extra yummy pizza crusts. Perfect timing for hubby's Super Bowl dinner.

I tried a new little tool that makes the rolls more like Kaiser buns. Cute little things!

Love the little cutter tool. Got it a while back, but had not used it until today. I know it's not really traditional to use it with sourdough, but what the heck, why not? And they look cool for sandwiches.

Wish we had some here. We just opted for pan seared filet with a basic baked potato, Just opened a 2012 Ermisch Pinot Noir that is beautiful. Hope to get to the Oregon wine country in April.

'Twas a quick bake. Started in the late morning and was pulling the last batch out of the oven by about 2:15. Sourdough always goes fast for me.

Had a delivery from the farmers who sell their grassfed meats and eggs to us. The wife said her daughter asked her, "Is this the lady who bakes the breads?" Yeah, I'm the bread lady to the kids. :lol2:

Another time when she made a delivery, I gave the wife a couple loaves of the sourdough. She and kids had missed lunch, and they were on the way to another city to make deliveries, so one of the loaves served as their lunch that day. They still talk about that. It was good timing, and I'm glad I gave two loaves.

The wife is interested to make her own sourdough, so I gave her about three cups of my starter, which I had been growing for a couple days to prepare for baking today. I emailed her some bread recipes to get started, and a link to a number of other ways to use the sourdough starter, including waffles, pizza dough, etc. I think she'll have some fun with this, and she already knows the kids love the bread.

I also sent her home with a loaf of challah bread to make French toast. That's always a kid-pleaser.

They take good care of us, and I'm happy to return the favor.

The sourdough I make is delicious with wine, I mean stunningly good.

You should try some bread making, chef Mik. I can serve as a mentor. I learned by trial and error, but a coach would have been nice. My technique will give you some really moist bread, with a crusty exterior and tender interior. It takes some practice to get so you are comfortable with the moister dough, but it's very worth the effort. Most bakery bread I've had does not offer such a high hydration level from the dough.

A bonus of the sourdough is that it naturally keeps longer and doesn't spoil as fast as other breads. That's handy for a two-person household.

Heh. I even did the calorie calculation per ounce for my sourdough, and added it as a custom food to my fitbit food database. If you need that, I am happy to share. :)

Awwww

You come to Minnesoooooooota, and I will feed you fresh homemade bread, pizza, etc.

I don't bake sweets so much anymore, but bread and pizza are regulars here. Every Sunday night is homemade pizza, and I make it as healthy as possible, but very tasty.

I bought her one for her birthday. It is remarkable how lugging laundry baskets upstairs becomes 'getting credit for more flights of stairs!'.

A possible business venture?

The Bread Lady? Brenda's Bakery? Our Daily Bread? Just Loaf'in Around? Buns By Brenda?

A Bun In The Oven?

Hmmmm.....Perhaps a politically themed bakery? Bread & Circuses?

They really are motivational. I'm sure it doesn't work for everyone, but it works for me, and I have gotten great benefit from it.

I have great respect for professional bakers. It's hard work to stand all day, and the big batches of dough they make would make mine look very small. I enjoy my baking, but I don't think I could enjoy running a bakery. Plus, the sweet stuff would be dangerous to be around all the time.

Then do a micro-bakery....maybe you sell to only clients on a preferred list. Or maybe you provide bread for a single restaraunt...

I already have a job that I love. :lol2:

My kitchen is not set up to be a commercial kitchen, and I don't want to change it. I likes it just the way it is. :sombrero:

Sometimes it is best for passions to remain for one's own enjoyment. I found that out when I sold wine in a wine store on Saturdays for a couple years. Too much of the business end was involved. The bottles I loved selling were often not easy to get much of.

Now, once I have retired here in a couple years I might look into something like bread for a restaurant. Could be fun.

Ya gotta have something to do in retirement.

It needs to be enough to keep you semi-busy, but not enough to drive you nuts.
