Beautiful instrument indeed! Mark, I have heard you play the piano but never heard you play the guitar. Would you grace us with a recording of your guitar playing? ;)

Well... From about 10 years ago or so... I still play these two pieces and will probably re-record them with the new Guitar. There are a few "less than perfect" notes in these recordings but they are pretty representative of my abilities.

I also do quite a bit of "rhythm/chord heavy" pieces and improvisations.

I mainly play in a fingerpicking style. Very undisciplined. Very undisciplined... lol

Sounds pretty darn good to me, Mark. :thumb:

I hate using a pick. Problem is my finger playing is terrible also. Eh, just not practicing right now.

Very nice. I have a Larrivee parlor which is my favorite couch guitar. Solid maple with Engelmann spruce top. Huge sound from a very small body. Enjoy!!

Thanks Aqua! I can play with a pick but I prefer just using my OEM equipment. I have no fingernails to speak of due to a lifetime nervous habit of nail biting. Man is it a hard one to kick. So, just the flesh areas are used but I have several "areas" I use for different tones. It's all on auto-pilot at this stage.

When I play with a pick I always fell like I am going to drop the pick. Maybe I haven't found the right pick yet after 30+ years. lol

My technique and repertory is 100% self taught. Never had a lesson in a my life except from friends showing me a chord or a passage for a particular piece.

Love the guitar. Between it and the piano the piano still wins as my instrument of choice. I switch between them every day and practice/play each for at least 30 minutes or more every day.

I just recently started playing the guitar again after a year or two of neglect. I am falling in love with it all over again!

Smashing Antiques

Quote:

Kurt Russell does not fuck around. That much should be clear by now. So if you don’t want Kurt Russell to destroy your valuable artifact, you should probably make that crystal clear prior to him picking it up. According to a new story in SSN Insider, the crew of The Hateful Eight failed to really internalize that notion: See, in one scene in the movie, Jennifer Jason Leigh’s Daisy Domergue is playing a guitar, and Russell’s bounty hunter stomps over to her, grabs it, and smashes it to pieces. Turns out that guitar was a priceless antique on loan from the Martin Guitar Museum, and they are less than thrilled to learn what happened. Mark Ulano, the film’s sound mixer, recounts a story about just what went wrong.

Quote:

The guitar was a loner from the Martin Guitar Museum and there were six doubles made. The guitar was from the 1870’s and was priceless. What was supposed to happen was we were supposed to go up to that point, cut, and trade guitars and smash the double. Well, somehow that didn’t get communicated to Kurt, so when you see that happen on the frame, Jennifer’s reaction is genuine.

Ulano says the museum’s original response to being told about the accident was surprisingly agreeable: “Do you need another one and can we please have all the pieces to display in our museum?” Unfortunately, that’s because the museum hadn’t heard the whole story. Needless to say, when museum head Dick Boak learned about the actual events, he was...displeased. Reverb has his thoughts on the matter.

Quote:

We were informed that it was an accident on set. We assumed that a scaffolding or something fell on it. We understand that things happen, but at the same time we can’t take this lightly. All this about the guitar being smashed being written into the script and that somebody just didn’t tell the actor, this is all new information to us.

Boak says that the museum will no longer loan their guitars to movies, under any circumstances, as a result of this incident. “We want to make sure that people know that the incident was very distressing to us,” Boak insists, probably while cradling the shattered remnants of his irreplaceable guitar. Also, we can’t confirm this, but when asked to comment, Kurt Russell probably grimaced and said, “Mmm-hmmm, tragic. Say, can you hand me that ukulele over there?”

Why would you tell that story here? :weeping:

Anyway...

It's a done deal!

I took my 1981 Vintage Ibanez Ragtime Special in just to compare it in the same environment. No comparison! The Larrivee L03 just sounds so freakin' nice!

I then proceeded to play every other acoustic in the store and still kept coming back to the Larrivee.

It was the best sounding guitar in the place no matter what the price. Granted there were no Martins there or other "high end/price" guitars but I was able to check it against a few $1500-$2000 Takamine and Seagull models. One Seagull came close but it was a full size dreadnought (huge body!) and it still did not have the warmth of tone or bell like ring of the Larrivee L03. It was also $800 more than what I paid for the L03.

I am happy. Mrs. Mark was/is a little irked that I decided to go ahead and actually buy it. lol Once she heard it, she understood why I did this but that doesn't mean she doesn't want to stay mad out of principle. lol

I played it for the past hour. Giving my fingers a rest.

OMG does it sound awesome in my long hallway.

Still in denial that I actually did this, but, there it is! :D

My callouses have blisters! lol I don't want to go to sleep...

Anyway... did a little recording and even decided this turned out "good enough" and I am putting myself "out there" by letting you hear this. I sing on this. ugh. I am a rank amateur when it comes to singing and recording... Please excuse any vocal "anomalies" that you expert and professional singers know about. I am clueless when it comes to vocals. Probably more than a little flat here and there... lol

I was playing and singing at the same time. No multi-tracking.

Oh yeah, 1 take. :D

This really needs a good set of headphones or speakers with very good bass response. The tinny little speakers in my MacBook do not do it justice by any means. If you choose to brave listening to me sing, please use some good headphones. It really does sound better.

So, big breath... and publish...

That guitar really rings out. Every string is distinct. That's the sign of a really great guitar. Good job singing and playing, too. You are going to be happy.

Mark, that is awesome. The sound of that guitar is, as Tom states, so very clear and musical.

Not to mention that you sound very British when you sing! Greg Lake II!
