The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |

Hundreds of Protesters Disrupt Jewish Reception at Chicago LGBTQ Conference Protesters accuse A Wider Bridge, a Jewish LGBTQ organization that seeks to build ties between gay communities in North America and Israel, of promoting 'pinkwashing.' JTA Jan 24, 2016 9:20 AM Israel-focused Jewish group booted from major LGBTQ event in the U.S. U.S. LGBTQ conference backtracks on banning Jewish event with Israeli gays Hundreds of protesters sought to disrupt a Shabbat service and reception for Jewish participants at a gay activism conference in Chicago. Chanting “Hey hey, ho ho, pinkwashing has got to go,” the protesters streamed through the Hilton Chicago on Friday night toward the service hosted by A Wider Bridge, a Jewish LGBTQ organization that seeks to build ties between gay communities in North America and Israel. Pinkwashing is the term used to described alleged efforts by Israel to cover up its treatment of Palestinians by touting its record on gay rights. The program, which featured members of Jerusalem Open House, a gay activist organization based in the Israeli capital, had earlier been canceled by The National LGBTQ Task Force, which organizes the Creating Change conference. The organization later reversed its decision. A statement Saturday from A Wider Bridge said protesters had entered the reception and taken over the stage, preventing the visiting Israelis from speaking. “Last night the values of free speech and respectful communication that we all value and that should be the hallmark of the Creating Change conference were replaced by a disgraceful authoritarian-like action that seeks to silence the voices of anyone the protesters feel don’t adhere to their rigid dogma,” the statement said. “Lies and gross distortions about A Wider Bridge and Israel were being repeated throughout the conference and at the protest. We look forward to working with the leadership of the Task Force to ensure that Creating Change can be a welcoming and safe space for LGBT people, Jews and non-Jews, who care about Israel.” read more: http://www.haaretz.com/jewish/news/1.699104 |

I was at a friend's house a couple months back. I was warned his new roommate was a nutjob, and he kind of is. Socially awkward and just doesn't have very much common sense. Also a Fundie and wants to start street preaching. (That's a whole other issue.) He was talking to their other roommate in the kitchen about, well, Hitler stuff. Something about the Holocaust being exaggerated. Then I heard the phrase, "had it coming." As in the Jews had it coming. Because of some Biblical nonsense. I haven't lost my shit like that in a long time, or maybe ever. I don't think that particular individual is an example of a greater problem with anti-semitism, but it sure as hell is an indication that a college tuition in and of itself is meaningless today. That dumbshit went to med school. The other roommate? She was a finance major and thinks you can cure autism with a gluten-free vegetable diet. That's not an exaggeration, she showed me the damn recipe list. |
