Well, less and more than expected in this case.

Ok, we're looking at options for the Budapest trip in late May to early June. Just as a curiosity question, I pondered aloud whether daughter's apartment might be an option, assuming the two roommates would be moving out at the end of the term. They are indeed moving out, and the landlady is cool with us renting it for an additional time.

We can rent the apartment for three weeks for about the same cost as staying at a hotel for a week. Airfare, the largest expense, is the same regardless of how long we stay. Daughter says meals are cheap, and we can have many breakfasts at the apartment to cut costs. A metro pass for a month is very inexpensive, and it's good for a month. That leaves just some of the ground travel costs and the sightseeing expenses as the variable components.

I'm seeing a longer trip than we first thought possible. More to see for less money.

Have you researched flying into a different city and taking the train?
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Not yet. Wanted to set the approximate dates for arrival and departure first, hence the current discussion of rental options.

We are very open to looking at some alternative routes, as long as it doesn't eat up too much time. Also, when we fly home, daughter will be with us, and we want to all fly together. She has to fly out from Budapest, or likely pay extra to make changes.

I can't offer anything, but would chime in that a train trip across the country (or several countries) could be pretty cool.

Hope you will be able to take some Budapanese lessons and get fluent in time. :silly:

Daughter thinks she will be taking a class in Hungarian this semester, and she already has had some immersion type class material in the language. I saw some of the material, and I can tell you it looks very difficult. I minored in German in college, and this looks far more difficult.

We've done the train trip kind of thing in Germany and Austria, and this time we would like to have a home base in Budapest, spend a couple weeks seeing the sights there and really experiencing the local culture. Maybe take in some concerts or other shows. Enjoy the cafe culture, and visit the nearby wine country, with a generous dose of restaurant visits in the evenings.

The third week would be for visiting the nearby towns and seeing the rural areas, which would entail some day trips on the trains, perhaps an overnight stay outside Budapest, or a couple overnights.

That's the thought right now, but that could evolve.
