It can also be that the check writer was so bent on his payback that he didn't think of that issue. As a Verizon customer, I got a kick out of someone causing some inconvenience to them for a change, even if only a little bitty bit.

When I set up our Verizon account for my roommate and I, we got our wires crossed about when the first payment would be due. I was a week late when I called�they didn't contact me about the late payment�and so they told me they wouldn't take a credit card payment over the phone. I had to pay by check in the mail. I didn't pay by check in the mail. I waited in line for 45 minutes every month and paid my bill in person, in cash. With ones. Whap! I'd slap down the 113 or so singles and let those assholes count it up. It was especially great when they asked me for my credit card. Then it was my turn to be creative. "A what now? ... A, what now? ... Now, what is this again?" "Here you go!" (Handing them over a used up Starbucks card or some such.) Etc.
	I cite irreconcilable differences.

He probably got a week's worth of giggles out of that.
