We can buy farm eggs and chicken meat from a couple sources now, so we have not gone into raising our own. If those sources become unavailable, then I would definitely raise our own. It's not because it would save us money, which is a common misperception, but because of the better quality of the eggs and meat. I even have a couple options for processing the meat, because our local ordinance doesn't allow that in a residential zone. We can have the chickens though. I got that passed for our city. |

If you're just killing an occasional chicken, who would know? p.s. If you don't want the mess and smell of plucking feathers, and don't mind not having skin on your chicken - don't pluck, skin the chicken. |

Jolly, I thought the same thing about 'who would know', and I also thought about all the deer that gets processed in residential areas everywhere in Minnesoooooooota. Nobody said life would be fair. It was hurdle enough just to get the local city officials to allow a small number of chickens per residential lot. No roosters allowed, just chickens. So, yeah, I went through all that red tape, and then the farmer we used to buy grassfed whole chickens from decided to start raising them again. If they stop, we'll be building a hen house. |

As long as you don't shoot 'em, I don't think anybody would be the wiser. Either wring their necks or use a killing cone and skin 'em in the garage or tool shed. The problem is in just raising pullets...they cost more from the start. |

Yes, the pullets are pricier to get. Our local ordinance only allows four hens at a time, so I would still likely have to buy some chicken meat. The eggs would make it worthwhile overall, and maybe that would be reason enough. I've got a source now for very reasonably priced farm eggs, so for now that's our best option. Yes, I know I could probably get away with butchering my own, but as long as I don't have to, I am content to get good quality chickens to purchase. They aren't cheap, but the local ordinance doesn't make it very cost effective when you can only raise four at a time. It's mostly an egg-lover's ordinance, not a meat-lover's, which is too bad for us. |
