It's been said that America would be destroyed from within. I'm not sure who's doing a better job of that. Obie or the PC crowd. |

Identifying narcissists isn't difficult. Just look for the person who is constantly fishing for compliments and admiration while breaking down over even the slightest bit of criticism. We have the freedom to choose our actions, but we do not get to choose our consequences. | |

I'm closing in on the end of my self-teaching on the Revolution. This may be a commonly held conclusion on the part of historians, I don't know, but my own impression is not so much that the Americans won the Revolution as that the British lost it. For sure the Americans pulled off near miracles, but if King George had put a competent commanding general on site in the colonies and left him to it, we Americans might still be taking high tea. It was his or Parliament's insistence on masterminding their war from London that led to repeated stumbles on their part. Later, George Washington wrote, "The singular interpositions of Providence in our feeble condition* were such, as could scarcely escape the attention of the most unobserving; while the perseverance of the Armies of the United States, through almost every possible suffering and discouragement for the space of eight long years, was little short of a standing miracle.” *In another communication he elaborated, " ... by numbers infinitely less, composed of men oftentimes half starved; always in rags, without pay, and experiencing, at times, every species of distress which human nature is capable of undergoing.” You have to wonder, though: If the British had prevailed then, would the Americans have resisted again in the future, and maybe again and again until independence was won? There were many of loyalist persuasion, but the rebels were passionate. |

Finally
|
Washington ran a guerrilla campaign. Knowing when to strike, when to hide. His plan, ultimately, became that of being a pest to the British, hoping that he could outlast them and they would eventually take the marbles and go home. With the eventual support of the French, that became easier. By the way, Cats, have you read Chernow's biography of Washington? It's wonderful. Just as good as his bio of Hamilton. It's been said that, except for a few critical miracles, we could have also lost WWII. |

Not yet, but both of those are on my list, along with Isaacson's of Ben Franklin. I feel the need for speed; am anxious to move ahead. Next up is The Perils of Peace by Thomas Fleming and then an accounting of the writing of the Constitution, The Summer of 1787 by David O. Stewart. What I expect will happen is that when I've caught up to modern times, I'll go back and revisit these other eras with books like your two. |
