Bowie was huge.
He's not on this list (greatest selling albums).

Even the Spice Girls, the freaking Spice Girls, sold more albums than he did.

Nope, no Bowie there either. Shania Twain beats him (she was almost as pretty).

That's not to say anything about artistry (which I never understood), but huge? GMAFB.
Jimi Hendrix, probably the most influential rock guitarist of the 20th century, isn't on that list either.

Bowie was certainly huge in the UK, whereas almost nobody would be able to tell you who Garth Brooks is over there, and they're all the better off for it.

I heard an interview with him from 2002. He said no one over here knew his albums, but they were common knowledge in Europe.

Mik didn't say influential, he said "huge."

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

Bowie was huge in Eastern Europe in the '90's. Particularly his earlier albums that were surpressed by the communists during the Brezhnev era.

I'd say that Hendrix was huge. He headlined Woodstock, FFS.

Anyway, if you want huge, go and listen to Meatloaf.

He was the last act on the last day. I guess you can call that headlining. Ritchie Havens opened the show on the first day, with other "headliners" such as Sweetwater, Bert Sommer, Tim Hardin, Melanie Safka, Quill...well you get the picture.

I'm not trying to denigrate the importance of Bowie, or, for that matter Hendrix. Both were phenomenally influential, and great musicians (though I never really cared for either - I still get the talent and influence).

But to say that someone is huge because he was at Woodstock, nah. He was huge because he was talented.

How, besides record sales, does one determine what "huge" is? Other artists sold more, a lot more records than Hendrix or Bowie. Other artists had prominent places at Woodstock.

What is the essence of "yugeness"?

Joe Cocker would be the one I would put at the top of the "most influential and musically creative person" list.

But not Bowie. He was pretty much just a freak show, in my opinion.

And a very entertaining freak show he was.

May he rest in peace.

I'm sure that Bowie wished to be regarded as a freak show by people. He started out as an English Dylan and quickly morphed into a pop music parody of Andy Warhol. He was a natural born actor and incorporated that aspect of his talent into his musical production and most importantly, his stage presence. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not so much. He will certainly rank high among the Pantheon of rockers and avant gardists that in part defined the latter half of the 20th century arts.

I know it when I see it :)

Obviously, it's a hugely subjective term. Is Beethoven Yüger than the Spice Girls? Of course he is, and anybody who says otherwise is a moron.

I think the fuss over Bowie is really because he's an iconic figure of a certain period, as well as having had a very long career as an A-list celebrity.

Yes. That's sort of what I was trying, obviously poorly, to say.

I just read that he was married to Iman for 23 years. He should be lauded for just that accomplishment in show business.
