I'm highly critical of our immigration policy, but let me ask you a question, George:

Should refugees be denied entry because the likelihood for conditions like TB is higher?

By that logic, Americans should be denied entry to most countries due to a higher likelihood for obesity.
TB is preventable, and a danger to others. And, I didn't say they should be denied entry, did I?

Obesity is, in theory, preventable, but not an imminent danger to others.

I have to get a TB test every 2 years. I don't find it much of a burden.

I think a society has a right, no, a duty, to protect its citizens from diseases that are transmissible and dangerous.

I had to get a TB test as part of my Green card application. My arm swelled up like a bloody balloon. I tried to tell them it was because my blood was English and reacted badly to foreign injections (at least I didn't say annoying little pricks), but they made me have the X-ray anyway.

And you didn't say the contrary either, hence my question.

Obesity is one of the most deadly conditions. It is also heritable - not primarily via genes, but via social settings. In that sense one could even say that is infectious.

True, but one can argue that a society also has a duty to support people who need help, so obviously this is a situation where one needs to find a reasonable balance of conflicting goals.

I think it's unreasonable to deny to an entire class, or group. However, there should be a mechanism in place to assure that their entry is safe for the society which they are joining.

Exactly.

What are the relative risks of exposing hundreds or more people to a terrible, terrible disease vs denying a few people entry because they are in need?

I'll leave that to the philosophers and ethicists.

Oh and

One can say that about a lot of "social" things - smoking, alcohol, etc.

The stupid thing about testing me for TB for the Green card was that they did it after I'd lived here for 4 years

Except that, by your choice of adjectives, you made it clear that you don't need philosophers or ethicists to find your answer to that question ;)

Yeah, the bad guys were "for the most part, immigrants".

Quote:

A leaked report into a surge in sex crimes by immigrants at German public swimming pools is a 'grave concern', according to officials.

The secret report's authenticity has been confirmed by the authorities in Dusseldorf which outlines the particular worry over rapes and sexual abuse of children.

It comes just months after the nightmare scenes in Cologne on New Year's Eve when hundreds of women were sexually abused by marauding gangs of migrants and less than a month since an Iraqi migrant was jailed for raping a 10-year-old boy in an Austrian swimming pool.

The internal report was issued for officers of the Criminal Commisariat 12 - responsible for sex crimes and missing persons - and states: 'The K12 can confirm a surge in sex crimes at these establishments.
'In particular rape and the sexual abuse of children in bathing establishments have given us grave cause for concern.

'The perpetrators are, for the most part, immigrants.'

The Bild newspaper revealed the document on Monday - just six months after the nightmare scenes in Cologne on New Year's Eve when the German welcome mat for refugees was well and truly rolled up.
In and around the main railway station on December 31 hundreds of women were sexually abused and robbed by marauding gangs of migrants as the police failed to tackle the situation.

Ever since then the number of migrants - men from sexually repressive Muslim countries - attacking scantily clad women and children at swimming baths has continue to soar.

How TB Spreads

TB bacteria are spread through the air from one person to another. The TB bacteria are put into the air when a person with TB disease of the lungs or throat coughs, sneezes, speaks, or sings. People nearby may breathe in these bacteria and become infected.

TB is NOT spread by
•shaking someone's hand
•sharing food or drink
•touching bed linens or toilet seats
•sharing toothbrushes
•kissing

When a person breathes in TB bacteria, the bacteria can settle in the lungs and begin to grow. From there, they can move through the blood to other parts of the body, such as the kidney, spine, and brain.

TB disease in the lungs or throat can be infectious. This means that the bacteria can be spread to other people. TB in other parts of the body, such as the kidney or spine, is usually not infectious.

People with TB disease are most likely to spread it to people they spend time with every day. This includes family members, friends, and coworkers or schoolmates.

Study Says Obesity Can Be Contagious

By GINA KOLATAJULY 25, 2007

Obesity can spread from person to person, much like a virus, researchers are reporting today. When a person gains weight, close friends tend to gain weight, too.

Their study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, involved a detailed analysis of a large social network of 12,067 people who had been closely followed for 32 years, from 1971 until 2003. The investigators knew who was friends with whom, as well as who was a spouse or sibling or neighbor, and they knew how much each person weighed at various times over three decades. That let them examine what happened over the years as some individuals became obese. Did their friends also become obese? Did family members or neighbors?

The answer, the researchers report, was that people were most likely to become obese when a friend became obese. That increased a person’s chances of becoming obese by 57 percent.

There was no effect when a neighbor gained or lost weight, however, and family members had less influence than friends.

Proximity did not seem to matter: the influence of the friend remained even if the friend was hundreds of miles away. And the greatest influence of all was between mutual close friends. There, if one became obese, the odds of the other becoming obese were nearly tripled.

The same effect seemed to occur for weight loss, the investigators say. But since most people were gaining, not losing, over the 32 years of the study, the result was an obesity epidemic.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

Women and Children First!

Er, no. Not at all:

Quote:

The number of refugees seeking asylum in European Union states (plus Norway and Switzerland) surged to a record 1.3 million last year, more than double the number of asylum seekers in 2014, according to a Pew survey published Tuesday. Nearly half of those migrants were young males.

According to data analyzed by the Pew Research Center, 42% of asylum seekers in Europe were men between the ages of 18 and 34.

Men were disproportionately represented among all groups of refugees seeking asylum in Europe, but the disparity was especially pronounced among Middle East and African countries.

The number of asylum seekers from the worn-torn nations of Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan more than quadrupled between 2013 and 2015. Young men made up nearly 40% of the refugees coming into Europe from Syria and Afghanistan, and nearly 50% of the refugees from Iraq.
