Two Wisconsin teenagers accused of luring a friend into the woods, stabbing her repeatedly and leaving her for dead more than a year ago will face attempted-murder charges as adults, a judge ruled on Monday.

Waukesha County Judge Michael O. Bohren, issuing his ruling from the bench, said the 13-year-old girls will stand trial on charges of attempted first-degree intentional homicide, which carry a punishment of as long as 60 years in prison, according to Anthony Cotton, a lawyer for one of the girls.

“There’s a much longer road ahead,” Mr. Cotton said. “I think the citizens of Waukesha will look at the evidence and conclude that it doesn’t support the charge that the prosecution has brought.”

There are no mandatory minimum sentences in Wisconsin, Mr. Cotton added. “If convicted, either girl could be placed on probation.” The girls are expected to be arraigned later this month, Mr. Cotton said.

Prosecutor Ted S. Szczupakiewicz didn’t respond to requests for comment on Monday, nor did the public defender representing the other girl.

The two girls, who were 12 at the time of the May 2014 stabbing, told authorities they planned to kill their friend to prove their dedication to a fictional character named Slender Man, who appears on a website that gathers horror stories, according to police in Waukesha, near Milwaukee. One of the girls told authorities that she wanted to prove to skeptics that the character was real, according to a criminal complaint.

The case has touched off a debate about the potentially damaging influence of the Internet on children, with local police calling it a “wake-up call for parents.”

The victim, also a 12-year-old girl, suffered 19 stab wounds, including to her liver, pancreas and stomach, according to a court complaint. After the attack, the victim survived by crawling out of the woods to the side of a road, where a passerby found her and called 911.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
I do not quite get how you try 13 year old emotionally disturbed girls as adults. It's a bluff.

Of course, that way they can move to Seattle and be implanted with IUD's by the Seattle School District without parental knowledge because they're adults.
