HOLY CARP!!!
|
I went into a store (ok, a liquor store) that I hadn't been in for probably a year. I'm just never in that area due to logistics, anymore. I recognized the checkout lady. She's always smiles, and I always appreciate that. I can't do that. But I do appreciate it. She kind of checked herself when I got up to her in line. But there was no one else in line, or around us, at that point. She asked me for my card, the store card, the credit card. There I am just trying not to be an asshole. I don't want people to see me for what I am. I'm all "I'm sorry", or "thank you", depending. Niceties. I really do care that she likes me. Then she just says it. I mean I'm already vulnerable, I guess. Not to deconstruct it. But she says "of all the customers who always come in here, you're the nicest". (Seriously, I'd never been there for at least a year.) Then she looks up at me. "And such a face. And Tall!" Now how's that for making your day? I recognize it for what it is. That is courage. To say that. |

I can't do it justice in words, but I did want, somehow, in my own narcissism, to convey that I really did appreciate this woman's kindness to me on this day. I can claim that it was rare. |

Thanks Brenda. The rareness does not extend to TNCR. You are one of the main reasons I think I can find a home here. Thanks. |

That's a sweet story, Horace, and especially so because it touched you in that way. Some people would have laughed it off, I suspect. As a 50-something myself, I've found a freedom to often say things to people that I wouldn't have in my younger days. I just don't worry so much about making a fool of myself. A little more comfortable in my own skin, or something like that. Feels damn good. |

And then there are some of us who take it even further. I have become the agent of change with my extended family, saying and doing things that needed to happen long ago, thus making life better for myself, my hubby, and my daughter. I try to stop short of hurting feelings, but if necessary, I will go that far, too. I've been much too accommodating with the relatives over the years, and they took advantage of it. They just gradually came to expect and demand it. No more. The 50s are an amazing age. Horace, I take exception to these lines in your original post:
You are completely wonderful, Horace, and you can feel comfortable letting people see that. |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. Along with Kenny and Steve and Ax, you are the only person here who's ever met me. I think you're beautiful. Whatever her motivations, I appreciated it. |

I remember it. I was at Kenny's piano party, and the topic of TNCR came up. Friday overheard it and introduced herself immediately. That was impressive. It really didn't turn out too good for me. I overstayed my welcome and it got weird. I don't know how to leave, and Kenny didn't know how to ask me to leave. I'm really not good with social stuff. But I did truly enjoy playing his piano. |

Today it was my turn to be told something weird. I was told that I look like Bocelli by a stranger. Has Bocelli been in a disfiguring accident that I am unaware of? |
