From Drone

tl;dr version: Man's sunbathing girl in backyard (behind 6 foot fence) sees drone hovering over his yard. She calls dad, dad shoot drone out of the air, and ends up in jail.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

The article doesn't actually say that the girl was sunbathing, it stated that she likes to sinbathe. Very leading. The writer was trying to elicit a certain response and he got it at the cost of any kind of journalistic integrity.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Didn't catch that. Interesting.

Another source says:
Quote:

A Kentucky man shot down an $1,800 drone hovering over his sunbathing daughter and was then arrested and charged with first degree criminal mischief and first-degree wanton endangerment.

“My daughter comes in and says, ‘Dad, there’s a drone out here flying,’ ” William H. Merideth, 47, told a local Fox News affiliate reported Tuesday. The Bullitt County father shot at the drone, which crashed in a field near his yard Sunday night.

Ooops, maybe it wasn't 10 feet: http://www.wdrb.com/story/29670583/update-drone-owner-disputes-suspects-claims-produces-video-claiming-to-show-flight-path

Listen, I am as concerned about the privacy issue as anybody, but this case isn't the one to hang our collective hats on.

By the way, not a chance that the guy shot a drone that's 10 stories up with a shotgun.

Then with what, a rifle? He'd be a hell of a shot at 200 feet with a (small) moving target.

It could be that the writer misread the same story that you did. Still, I would like to see what was on the camera. It's interesting that the operator hasn't released that.

I'm just saying that if it was with a shotgun, then the target was lower than 100 ft despite whatever the operator was claiming. If it was over 100 feet, then yes, it had to have been a rifle.

100 ft to hit a drone with a rifle? Luke can put five shots into a quarter at 50 feet, so I imagine a drone to be no problem at 100 with a rifle.

Not really, would you? Nobody thinks he's a bad person. If you're a skeeze using a drone to spy on your neighbor and your neighbor's dad shoots it out of the sky, then obviously he's the asshole because your drone was destroyed.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

HOLY CARP!!!
I's shoot that sucker down in a heartbeat if it was over my property.

Then I'd deny it. Let them prove the buckshot came from my gun.

(Not that I actually own a gun.)

Legally, I don't see why they would. How would its contents change the facts? Destruction of property doesn't have exceptions for instances like this as far as I know; they don't throw cases out for fathers defending their daughters' honor.

Obviously playing the advocate here; I thought we needed to double down on our privacy rights back when PRISM became public knowledge, but most of what I heard at the time was B.S. about Snowden.

Does flying over one's property constitute trespassing?

If so, what's the altitude limit? Should I hire an attorney to sue Southwest Airlines which flies over my property regularly?

You don't have to be very high up in the air to have confusion over which property you're on.

Shortstop

A drone anywhere near my house is inside Class B (Dulles Airport) airspace in violation of FAA regulations.

The air from the surface up to 10,000 feet within 7 miles of Dulles belongs to this Class B airspace. The complete definition gets more complicated.

Drones aren't allowed above 500 feet. There are some other restrictions.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy
