That's cool as hell. I wonder what, if anything, they used for anesthesia and what kind of functionality the As a side note, I just found out that one of my partners (who used to be an orthopedic surgeon) put a k-wire into his cat's tibia (I think it was the tibia...). Vet wanted $1500. He said he'll do it at home.

Opium was known pretty far and wide in the ancient world. I suspect some opium and a couple Egyptian craft brews would be state of the art. |

The eye doc my wife worked for, once did a cataract surgery on a golden retriever. Who does the anesthesia, if no vet is used? |

No kidding. It'll cost more than 1500 to have someone hold down the cat. |

my dog had an intramedullary nail for a broken femur (hit by a car). That was years ago but I had to go to a canine orthopedist and it cost plenty. |

I wonder if they can determine if this surgery is what ended his life, or was it in place for x years? |

Honestly I don't know. I'm not an orthopedist. But the main reason to nail a fracture is to stabilize the bone to allow healing. If the mummy guy had a bad fracture of the tibial plateau he might have not been able to even put any weight on the leg or use his knee, so even immobilization would have been an improvement. Amazing that there was no infection. Orthopedists are manic about sterility because osteomyelitis or bone infection is an orthopedic catastrophe. |
