HOLY CARP!!!
|
I've never had a job before where I get paid vacation. Because I started so late in the year last year I only got one day this year. I picked a random Friday in June and got a 3-day weekend. Next year I get 2 weeks! If I can get it all together I want to drive across Canada to Vancouver as I've never been anywhere west of Ontario. I'd bring a friend with me if any of my friends can get the same time off, if not I'll just make it a solo adventure. I would drive through the Northern US on the return trip. What should I not miss going through the Northern states? More likely it'll be 2 separate weeks. In that case I would take a shorter Canadian road trip, probably to Winnipeg as its where my family originates and I've never been. Plus I still get to see the rest of Ontario along the way since I've never been north of the little southern "tail" of the province. My second week off I would take a US based road trip. What direction/route would you recommend, assuming I have about 7 days at my disposal and I'm starting out in the Toronto area? |

Wow, I would have guessed that Canadians would enjoy more paid vacation but I seem to be wrong. Over here, the law requires every employee to get at least 34 paid days off per year. |

My first year in Canada I got ten days. TEN STINKING DAYS. To make matters worse, after we got bought out by Siemens we had to put up with German management criticizing us for not working hard enough. During one video-conference that went down in infamy, a German product manager told us that it was essential that we work overtime in order to complete our phase by the end of June, since the entire German team would be out of the office on vacation for the month of August, and needed time to prepare. |

Ahhh ... northern states! Minnesooota: Stay at the Naniboujou Lodge at least one night, and make the short drive to Grand Marais, MN. I can tell you about restaurants and such there. They have The World's Best Donuts there. Really. If you can schedule to be there for the summer solstice in June, or the Art Fair in July, those are both wonderful. You can see what classes you might like to take at the North House Folk School. Check their schedule at their website. Grand Portage has a great living history museum. There are numerous state parks with waterfalls and other lovely natural features, too many to mention all of them, and you can google those. Wisconsin: Bayfield, stay at the Rittenhouse Inn or one of their other homes that are part of the Rittenhouse properties. We like the Le Chateau house of the options they offer. Go to the Big Top Chatauqua near Bayfield for a show. It's a great experience, and they have a variety of types of performers for you to choose from, depending on the date you are there. Their schedule is also online for purchasing tickets. Excellent restaurants in Bayfield. From Bayfield you can tour the Apostle Islands. There are boat tours pretty much every day. You can even stay on one of the islands, if you reserve early enough. Michigan, Upper Peninsula: The Copper Harbor area is lovely, and you should try to find The Jampot, a business run by Monks who make delicious jams, breads, candies, and other treats. It's out in the woods near their monastery, and it's worth the drive. Stay at the Laurium Manor Inn in Laurium, Michigan. That will be near The Jampot in Eagle Harbor, MI. Michigan, The Hand: Mackinac (Mackinaw) Island is a treat. The whole island is car-free, so you'll take a boat from the mainland to get there. Even if you can only stay for a day, it would be fun. If you can stay for a night, do that, too. More later! |

![]() Funny how different North American and European views on vacation are. I think 10 days is a LOT especially considering all the paid holidays throughout the year which bumps it to closer to 20 days. |

A friend of mine said 'Americans want things, Europeans want time'. I now get the option of buying 5 extra days vacation - so now I get 29 days a year, which is borderline civilised. |

That's the spirit! Unless one has to fight with actual poverty problems, working too much is a waste of life time, even if one enjoys the job. There are way too many interesting things to do to spend all the time on one of them. |
