HOLY CARP!!!
|
One of the more interesting things I've found about living in the South is that almost everyone I know from down here has been in one branch of the military or other. On the other hand only one person I know from Connecticut or NYC has ever enlisted in the military (and that was because of a low draft number in the waning days of Vietnam. It just wasn't an option if you weren't forced into it. So I found this pretty interesting statistic about where military come from. They are for the most part Southerners. I suppose there is a reason for it, but I don't quite know what it is. ![]() http://sfachapterix.blogspot.com/2013/08/the-demographics-of-enlisted-troops-and.html |

Interesting.... the more a state leans toward being filled with leftwing loons, the more it leans toward being filled with cowards as well... |

A lot has to do with timing. I did not want to go in until we were out of Vietnam, then they didn't need anyone when I wanted to join the Navy. |

I wouldn't of minded being a Commodore. Captains has a lot of work running boats and going places and doing things, admirals have lots of responsibilities running fleets and such, but a commodore seems to fit right above the doing and right below the thinking. Also, I would like to be in charge of a cruiser. Battleships, destroyers, etc. all sound kind of dangerous--but now cruiser, it sounds like you just cruise around all day. Though I know I could be very wrong about my thoughts on these subjects.

Andy, I don't drink. I take your as a slur against my ethnicity. That means you're a racist. You've been following me around for months now, taking every opportunity you can find to tke a swipe at me. I even went so far as to provide you your very own thread to tell everyone just why it is that you feel such a need to stalk me. You were too cowardly to respond. It's time for you to stop. |

Larry, I realize this is all supposed to be in good fun, but your comment about liberal states being filled with cowards wasn't exactly well timed based on what happened this week. |

My comment had nothing to do with Andy's post. My point about timing referred to the marines who were killed this week. If you actually believe the liberal states are filled with cowards, then good luck to you - I'd assumed you were joking. |

I fail to see what my belief about liberal states has to do with the shooting in Chattanooga. I guess one could point out that the reason these soldiers weren't able to defend themselves was because of the anti-gun sentiments of the liberal states who are the ones mostly responsible for the view that a soldier trained to defend *us* are supposed to be allowed to defend themselves.. And I guess one could also point out that the phrase "I support the soldiers, I just don't support the military" is mostly heard from a liberal state than it is from a conservative state.. but to draw a connection between the obvious political and ideological truth about liberals and the shootings in Chattanooga strikes me as silly. |

The point of my post was that three of the five marines who died were from States that are grey in the map that Tom posted. The States you wrote off as being filled with cowards. The inference of what you wrote, incidentally, is that anybody who didn't choose to serve in the military is a coward. I don't suppose you really meant that, but that's how it reads. Like I said, all in good fun, but the timing's a bit off. |

I did not say that. Look at the graph. There are people in the military from every single state. I'm not talking about individuals. I'm talking about trends, and how those trends line up with other trends. Those states with the least number of military recruits are also the states most likely to support the notion of banning guns. Most likely to be the states where the majority of people think soldiers shouldn't be allowed to carry a weapon while on the job. Most likely to express anti-military sentiments. Likewise, they are most likely to hold no religious convictions, most likely to be all those things that make up the ideological nonsense commonly (and mistakenly) referred to as "liberal". On the other hand, I'm sure you'll find individuals in Texas who share the above sentiments. But - the general trend in Texas thinking is pro-military, most would agree that soldiers should be allowed to be armed while working, and so forth. It's trends, not individuals. Cowards are everywhere. Even in the military. The point I'm making is not about individuals, but about regions, their trends, and the general worldview of the majority in those regions. |

Just got back to this thread. That's a fascinating article Jolly, thanks for reposting the link. It is reassuring to read studies about the quality of our modern armed forces. I have a niece who will likely join the RAF next year, her exam results were outstanding (11 GCSE's... 10 of which were A*, the eleventh a mere A, LOL). |
