Arrrr.....![]() I'm waiting till 5 to pour me one... I have standards... they're low, but I have them. Doing well, dude. Last three years were a bitch, but I'm in a much better place now. Life at the bay is awesome. Boating, fishing and chillin' at the pool that I put in back in '12. Enjoying the company of a lovely lady I've been seeing for a while. Playing the piss out of guitar lately after getting an effects box with drum effects and a looper. And you? I was down to see my brother back in March for several days on my way to the Keys for a week. Thought about calling you, but figured you had all but forgotten about this place. Good to see you back. |

Identifying narcissists isn't difficult. Just look for the person who is constantly fishing for compliments and admiration while breaking down over even the slightest bit of criticism. We have the freedom to choose our actions, but we do not get to choose our consequences. | |

I have no standards. I've taken up the tricone dobro--and little by little as I become an old southern gentleman I begin to play guitar like one. Both kids are headed for school in NY and me and the old lady might follow them. Or we might not. We don't know. But I'll tell you this: if you come into Florida again without telling me you will be shot on sight by a whole bunch of rednecky guys. It would be good to have a beer or two. And I'll be in the Keys on Tuesday. |

Yes it is pretty good although a tad pricey for a local brew new on the market. |

Ah, hell, it's that way everywhere. I'm working with some folks in North Dakota and we just exchanged local brews. He sent me Fargo Brewing Company's Woodchipper IPA. Good, if a chilling association.

Sorry didn't notice this. Well I acquired this Georgia redneck biker friend (he lives in Florida now) that wants to hang with other bikers when they get together and sing a bit and play a musical instrument with them. So helped him choose a musical instrument--banjo--and helped him start playing a bit. Se started doing bluegrass (new to me) a bit together and we were joined by my friends brother a failed guitarist/singer/songwriter from Nashville. So we have this little band. My friend is a-pickin' and his brother is a-strumin' are they BARELY hanging on with their instruments (though our harmonies are pretty good) so we needed something to tie things together--and that's a slide guitar which I did not play. I looked around at various Dobro type guitars and I really fell in love with the tricone jangle. The wooden Dobros were to smooth for what we needed. I went on the Resonator Forum and asked a bunch of questions and ended up getting a Recording King round neck. I got the built up nut that converts it into a laptop, but I soon took it off--I just couldn't play it worth a damn, so now I play bottleneck and it sound "OK" I'm not great--there's a lot to learn. Once I master this I may try to learn lap. But I have a long way to go. Our band's bucket list plan is to busker on Duval Street in Key West. Your Beard is a nice guitar. |

Try to track down the late Bob Brozman's slide guitar techniques DVD on Homespun. Bob gave some pretty useful tips on bottle neck slide technique specific to resonators like your Tricone. Yeah lap style is a completely different instrument, but once you get the hang of it and figure it's illogic, you never turn back. In addition to the Beard E, I also have a Beard R (that I keep tuned to a high open E Bluegrass tuning) an OMI Dobro - perfect for playing old style country tunes especially when you drop the second string to A and play behind the bar, a locally made mahogany Weissenborn guitar, and an eclectric lap steel. keep on pickin' |

I wouldn't recommend either high tuning on a round neck instrument - too much stress on the neck. So we won't go there. Besides, playing behind the bar lap style and playing behind the bar bottleneck style, are two completely different techniques. The former involves bending the second string a half or full tone with your ring finger as you slide producing a pedal steel effect. On bottleneck it refers to playing with overtones produced when you slide from the tenth fret while fingerpicking between the nut and slide - Martin Simpson is a master of this colourful effect. The good news is that you can do this in any slack key bottleneck tuning. I have used it when tuned to DADGAD. |
