Angela Merkel has come out against gay marriage, saying that she agrees with civil partnerships but believes matrimony is just for men and women.

The German Chancellor backed equal benefits for same-sex couples, such as tax breaks, and said discrimination should be ‘eliminated’.

But the committed Christian, who has been married twice, gave her personal definition of marriage as ‘a man and a woman living together’, in a YouTube interview with Florian Mundt, a YouTube known under the alias LeFloid who has a significant online following.

“I’m someone who is very supportive of us eliminating all discrimination. We have come a long way; when I remember, 25 years ago, many people didn’t dare to say that they are gay or lesbian," she said, according to the Huffington Post.

“For me, personally, marriage is a man and a woman living together. That is my concept, but I support civil partnerships.

Ms Merkel went on to say stress that marriage should be strictly defined as between a man and a woman, adding: "I am for registered civil partnerships. I am for our not having any discrimination in tax legislation. And wherever we still find discrimination, we will continue to dismantle it," according to German broadcaster Deutsche Welle.

Explaining further, the German leader said: "I don’t want discrimination and [I want] equality, but I make a difference at some point."

In May, Ms Merkel ruled out introducing same-sex marriage in Germany following the referendum in Ireland.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

It's funny how nobody seems to get all riled up about this elsewhere. As long as they allow civil unions and equal benefits, most people don't seem to mind, since from a legal perspective it's pretty much equivalent.

If I was gay, I'd be pretty much OK with that, too.

Agreed. However, I think the homosexual population wants the legitimization of their relation to be such that it's called a "marriage." Seems to me that Merkel's making the point that, for her, at least, the definition of that is man/woman. Beyond that, she doesn't give a rat's ass, and neither do I.

All the more reason to keep marriage in the churches and the contract in the government.

I would be OK with it too ... heck, I prefer it... if government would completely not deal with "marriage" at all and just do everything through the construct of "civil partnership."

Not sure whether that's the case with Germany, but since the US government does indeed deal with "marriage," then it's only fair that whatever it does with "marriage" applies to heterosexual and homosexual couples.

Not until the scotus started to legislate.

Except maybe for some irs and ss rules.

Matrimony remains exclusively between a man and woman regardless of civil legal definitions of the term marriage. Matrimony is a religious sacrament binding a man and woman together. Marriage is a legal status between two individuals.

So matrimony is like the religious equivalent of credit card debt?

Pretty much where most of America is at, including the Far Right. Even as conservative as the Deep South is, I think you would elicit nothing much more than a yawn against a civil union bill in any state...

As recently as 2004 Arkansas passed a referendum explicitly outlawing recognition of same sex civil unions performed in other states.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Yes, it seemed to me from what I'd read that a lot of people didn't want to allow homosexual civil unions at all.

And even more recently than that, candidate Obama declared marriage as being the union of one man and one woman.

Maybeso.

But the trial balloon was floated down here, and at the time, Jindal said he would endorse it. There wasn't much opposition.

It's probably a bit late to be willing to accept universal civil unions at this point.
