Only in America would adopting the metric system be considered some wild and whacky idea, championed by eccentrics. |

Why is the metric system so good? What, in its nature, makes it better? Sure, there's something aesthetically appealing about the divisibility of 10. But, if it were so nice, wouldn't scientists talk about it all the time? Why would they talk about light years? And parsecs? And Jiffys? And blips? And atomic units? And earth masses? Because they're convenient - like "foot". I suppose it's easy enough to say "30 centimeters" as opposed to "a foot." For some. Because, fucking science. Edited by George K, Jun 3 2015, 05:54 PM.

Try doing lots of calculations using different measurements made in 'thou', inches, feet, yards and miles. Then try doing them using measurements made in mm, cm, m and km. It's a lot easier. Or try doing calculations using 'pound-feet' rather than 'Newton meters', or 'bar gauge' rather than Pa. Then buy an international standard which is all written using S.I units, and try and apply all the requirements using imperial units. I'm sorry, the US is living in the stone age when it comes to this issue- what makes it even worse is that ANSI standards will quote both systems, and people talk about 'thou' one minute, and then 'mm' the next. American exceptionalism shouldn't apply to units of measurements.
It's not just appealing, it's way, way easier. How many yards in a mile? - How many people can multiply or divide by 1760?
Scientists by and large haven't got the common sense they were born with. Talk to an engineer if you want something useful built. |

I totally agree with you about the ease of calculations - at work, I think in terms of centimeters, milliliters, etc. For years I thought that the metric system should be easily applicable to every day life. Yet, as I pointed out, some scientists disagree, because they use non-metric measurements to describe things ("light-year"). Sometimes, it's just easier to say that. Of course, when they start doing calculations, they convert it to the whatever-it-is-I'm-on-my-second-Scotch-of-the-evening-I-can't-calculate-it-now number. Oh, you said, "engineer." I thought we were talking science, not locomotives. So, you're a Chafee suporter, then...eh? |
