While this is true in many cases, it is not true with regard to privacy protection, particularly in Germany. This is a quite political and sensitive topic over here, and our rules to stop governments and businesses from obtaining too much data are rather strict. As an example, Germany is one of the few countries where Google has mostly stopped its "Streetview" service out of frustration about the many lawsuits. Telecommunication companies must delete usage data after a short while. And so forth. As an example of where the government is limited: We have many cameras on the highways whose purpose is to check whether trucks have paid the road service charge. They make a photo and identify the license plate of every car. However, the data must be deleted immediately when there is no case of unpaid road service charge; the police cannot use it to, say, identify stolen vehicles. |

"Europeans" really is a misnomer. The differences between the UK, Germany and France are pretty large - certainly in the UK there's no privacy - cameras are everywhere. |
