I don't get HBO so I seldom watch Game of Thrones, but I was reading a review of the most recent episode and was struck by this line...

Game of Thrones presents us with an ensemble of perverse Beethovens and then forces us to watch them all go deaf in real time.

ZOOOOOM!

I remember watching Pan's Labyrinth back in '06 and getting really excited. Fantay's gonna hit the mainstream! Hooray!

But now there's just a lot of silliness going on that fantasy didn't have to deal with back in the 70s and 80s. Martin's getting WAY too much credit for his series. WAY. The show is leagues better. In fact the team working on it could have thrown a dart at the Fantasy section of any bookshop and made a venerated success out of anything they hit.

They elevated a run-of-the-mill series to this stratospheric brand status it doesn't really deserve. I'd rather watch Wizards.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

I haven't seen any film. As a newb to the genre I read one trilogy, then followed that with Martin's first book in his Game of Thrones. I liked it well enough but wasn't motivated to read the rest. I still think the trilogy I read first was way better, and I haven't found any writers in this genre that are as good.

The trilogy is by Michael J. Sullivan and the titles are Theft of Swords, Rise of Empire and Heir of Navron.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

Watched most of the final Harry Potter movie last night. They are all holding up quite well and frankly are underrated.

How in the world can one of the most popular series of all time be underrated?

I think in terms of their cinematic merit.
