The Fourteenth Amendment (1886) disagrees:
Subsequent amendments have talked about "The citizens' right" to vote. The Fifteenth Amendment states: "right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied" The Nineteenth Amendment states: "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex." Citizens, not people. What countries allow non-citizens to vote? |

I was surprised to learn that certain non-citizens (i.e. from commonwealth countries) could vote in the UK. They draw the line at Americans for obvious reasons. I don't really mind not being able to vote over here in the General elections, however I do rather miss being able to vote for my local town council, since our kids attend the schools, and the local policies affect us much more directly. |

So, my husband, who is a green card holder, can't vote. But some people think it's okay for illegal immigrants to vote? WTF?? |

I am quite confident you'll find that those who think illegal immigrants should be able to vote would also think that legal permanent resident (i.e. "green card holder") like your husband should also be able to vote. |

So, I can give up my British and Canadian citizenships in order to be able to help choose between people like Barack Obama and Mitt Romney! OK, there must be a downside to this deal somewhere - can somebody help me out? |

No, your vote will be more meaningful at the local level ... think city council, school board, may be even the state assembly/senate. |

Indeed, you can move back to Canada or Britain at any time and still be legally obliged to file annual tax returns with the IRS regardless of residency. Upon review it might even demand that you pay US taxes. Taxation by citizenship: A rare privilege afforded only to citizens of two world nations, the USA and Eritrea. |

There's an effort to allow illegal aliens to vote in city council elections and mayoral elections. I'm against it, but not as strongly as I would be for national elections. It's not as bad as it could be since the state has a good deal of control over city policies. |

Why does nobody ever talk about legal non-citizen immigrants in this context? If you listen to the media you'd think all immigrants were illegal. If you're going to start affording additional electoral rights to immigrants, it would make logical, if not political, sense to afford them to legal permanent residents first. |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |

On the positive side, every year I get asked to do Jury duty, something I was never asked to do in either the UK or Canada. Presumably this is because there are a lot more criminal types over here. I can politely decline their kind offer based on my lack of Americanism. With my luck I'd end up re-trying Whitey Bulger or something, and have to go into a protection program. |

They did, pretty much. And I was just being a doofus about the movie. It's not about Whitey Bulger at all, even though that's the hype they used to sell it. It was a complete and total knockoff of Infernal Affairs. |

Perhaps you are referring to a different movie than I was. Black Mass is based on the book of the same title. I haven't read it, but it sounds interesting. |
