Digital piano sales inched up 3.7 percent last year, with 135,257 units sold — nearly 100,000 more than acoustic pianos, according to the Music Trades report.

At some point I'll be in the market again. It'll be my fourth. Second acoustic.

What counts as Digital Piano? If this counts as well, the comparison is not so impressive.

Some things I've noticed....

Surprisingly, there are some pretty decent pianos out there at some pretty decent prices. Some of the Chinese factories are producing some nice stuff. Check out the new Baldwin grands, the Brodmann grands, the upper series of Rittmuller grands, the Hailun verticals and the Perzina verticals.

OTOH, the top tier stuff (3B's + Steinway), grand or vertical, is far beyond the reach of the ordinary person.

Meanwhile, the electronic stuff is getting better and better, and the price keeps falling in relation to the features you're getting. Most of the time, a family's first piano is no longer an acoustic.

It should be obvious that there is a difference between a toy with keys on it and a digital piano, and that no one would make a graph about digital pianos that included KMart toys.

I agree, but where is the cutoff point? Since the volume of digital keyboard instruments is presumably much higher in the low-price segment, the figure you quoted is hard to interpret without knowing what they counted.

I have to tell you, as I downsize I am seriously considering one of the newer Yamaha digital grands. They are quite impressive.

Typically, to be considered a "digital piano" the instrument must have at least 76 full sized keys, weighted action, and the emphasis of the instrument is focused on producing an accurate piano sound and feel.

Anything that doesn't fit that description is not considered a "digital piano", it's called a keyboard.

Amazing how closely those statistics mirror unit sales in the housing market. Wait a minute, you don't suppose there could be a correlation?!

Doom! Doom!

Houses are a good container for acoustic pianos.

Wow! I did not realize that the decrease in sales of pianos was so high.

Too much competition of other entertainment sources sadly. :(

Not so much. It really does relate very closely to home sales. Plus, there are a lot of really nice digital pianos being sold.

The numbers also don't take into account all of the used pianos being sold. We sell twice the number of used pianos that we sold in 2005.

Has the ratio of new/used changed as well?

One of these days I'm going to unload that tractor trailer load of old grand pianos I had planned to rebuild, and actually rebuild them.

I'd like to see the stats, but bear in mind that a lot of used piano sales go unreported. My bet is that used piano sales are through the roof.

It would be interesting to see whether the trend in acoustic piano sales is related to how much people play on pianos these days.

It could also simply be that there are enough existing acoustic pianos - these things last a long time, after all.

That is an interesting idea. When people buy a nice piano, they tent to keep if for a really long time. For a car, which can be similar price, a person will get a new one every 5-15 years.

However, when you read old stories and old movies, it seemed that every house had a piano. Now, that is not the case.

But those old stories and old movies often focused on "upper class" life, hence I'm not sure whether piano usage has decreased all that much.

I also wonder how many of the pianos that are older than 20 years are actually in a decent, well-maintained shape.

Sounds like a pleasant retirement hobby with potential profit. I've always fancied making traditional flutes.
