HOLY CARP!!!
I despise the idea that skin color can affect anything beyond the social ideas associated with it. America's ideas about skin color seem irreversibly polarized, to some extent not seen since we actually did have slavery.

I freely admit that I may be neurotic. But walking around, I'm human and natural (I mean, to the extent that I'm ever that way) when interacting with someone who I haven't been told automatically distrusts me. But I'm white, and I know how black people have been told I think about them. And I don't have the social skills to mask my worry about what they might be thinking.

And so it promulgates.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

It gets easier. With age comes diminishing worry about what anyone thinks, regardless of color.

And as far as slave ownership is concerned I believe Mrs. Obama's ancestors were white slave owners and Mr. Obama had slave ancestors on his white mother's side.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

I really never thought about it till I got to CA. (I've mentioned before that at my high school, a black guy, born to a normal middle class family, happened to be voted Most Popular as a senior. Everybody thought it was the obvious choice. Everybody liked him because he was just a nice guy, and also good looking and a good athlete. High school stuff.) But in CA, things seem different. It is much more us vs them here.

But it's so difficult to know anything outside what you see reported. The internet is obsessed with skin color, because it gets clicks.

ZOOOOOM!
Get more black friends. Then it becomes less of a thing.

Unless you're dealing with someone who wants to make it a thing, in which case you'll always lose that one so might as well move on.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Try match.com, black males seeking white male. Make sure to specify you're just looking to be friends.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

It was a little awkward, which is why I added that little bit of advice at the end.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.
