It's a shame he can't address such a serious issue without turning it into a partisan diatribe.

Perhaps that "diatribe" is the truth about the serious issue being discussed....

Well, it's not really. Obama clearly hasn't helped, but as the article points out, this has been building for the last 40 years, and Obama has actually just done something to try and put the brakes on.

If the article spent less time taking shots at the guy who's been doing the job for the last 6 years, and making more constructive suggestions, it might be less tempting to just close it down as yet another boring rant.

This problem isn't going to go away in a hurry. Let's hope the people on the right currently complaining about it don't mysteriously fall quiet if and when a Republican is elected.

Maybe it's time for the US to follow the British lead, and have unarmed policemen as a matter of course?

Obviously, heads would explode, both literally and figuratively.

The "people on the right", especially the Second Amendment guys, have been beating this one for years. Who do you think raised all the Hell about Ruby Ridge or the Branch Davidians? The Left? BWHAHAHAHAHA!

From across the pond, The Branch Davidians appeared to be the archetypal American experience - armed religious nutcases killed by overly-militarised law enforcers who wanted to use their hardware just a little too much.

They could have arrested David Karesh anytime on the streets of Waco where he could frequently be seen shopping and whatnot. The whole thing was a massive excercise in colossal stupidity.

There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it".

It certainly helped confirm the American stereotype in a lot of British eyes, along with Sgt. Howard Hunter from the Hill Street Blues.
