My nephew had his new (to him) with him this weekend. That was one fine sounding guitar. Good enough that he sold his D-16 Martin to buy it.

Not his, but the same style and year model:

Bit of a big'un. My favourite size/type is parlour, and in a fit of generosity, just gave mine to daughter #2 on her 16th birthday.

Nephew plays a variety of styles...His new guitar was very good at being soft and clear, but could really put the hammer down on some flat-picking bluegrass. One of the best guitars I've heard in awhile.

OTOH, we may just be in a Golden Age for acoustic guitars. I think Martin has turned out some of their best stuff in the last ten years. There are other makers also making some fine guitars.

There are even some pretty good guitars that aren't overly expensive. This particular one is $683 at Maury's:

That's pretty damn cheap. A Martin was $400 when I was in high school.

I looked at Blueridge real hard when buying my daughter's guitar. While not a $1800 Martin, they are very nice for their pricepoint and can hold their own with more expensive guitars.

For one of the best deals in guitars (and you have to pick one up in person, since their QC varies) check this out:

So, with all these values running around, why did my girl wind up with a Martin? I ran across a smoking deal on a DSR2, and we had a chance to pick from several. It's Mexican, but it has the Martin Sound. The older it gets, the better it plays:
